Eren Yeager

Eren is born in Shiganshina District, a town projecting from the southern edge of Wall Maria, to physician Grisha Yeager and Carla Yeager. He grows up alongside Mikasa Ackerman, whom the Yeager family takes into their home after the murder of her parents. Even before experiencing the destruction caused by the Titans personally, Eren despises the idea of spending his life enclosed behind the Walls.

His fascination with the outside world is strengthened by Armin Arlert, who shows him a forbidden book describing oceans, deserts, fields of ice and other landscapes beyond humanity's known territory. For Eren, those places come to represent more than simple curiosity. Knowing that humanity cannot freely reach them makes the Walls feel like a cage, and he becomes fascinated with the Survey Corps because its soldiers are willing to venture beyond that cage despite the enormous casualty rate.

In the year 845, the Colossal Titan breaches Shiganshina's outer gate and the Armored Titan breaks through Wall Maria's inner defenses. The resulting Titan invasion destroys the district and forces its surviving population deeper into the Walls. Eren witnesses his mother being trapped beneath their ruined home and then eaten by a Titan, an experience that turns his existing resentment toward the Titans into an explicit determination to eradicate them.

Eren later enters the 104th Training Corps with Mikasa and Armin. He initially struggles with vertical maneuvering equipment because of faulty training gear, but once the defect is discovered he proves capable and eventually graduates fifth in his class. The Battle of Trost fundamentally changes Eren's place within humanity's military. Grisha Yeager is Eren's father and a physician in Shiganshina. Grisha Yeager keeps significant parts of his past hidden from his son and promises to show him the basement of their home after returning from a journey. Grisha is an Eldian Restorationist originally from Marley who inherits the Attack Titan, steals the Founding Titan from the Reiss family and later passes both Titans to Eren by turning him into a Pure Titan and allowing himself to be eaten.

Carla Yeager is Eren's mother and one of the strongest emotional influences on his childhood. Carla Yeager opposes his desire to join the Survey Corps because she fears losing him. Her death during the fall of Shiganshina becomes the immediate event behind Eren's vow to exterminate the Titans. The finale later reveals Eren's horrifying awareness of how events surrounding Dina Fritz's Titan contributed to Carla's death.

Zeke Yeager is Eren's older paternal half-brother. Their relationship develops only after Eren learns the truth about his father's earlier family. Zeke Yeager believes they are both victims of Grisha's ideology and attempts to form a genuine fraternal bond with him. Eren secretly rejects Zeke's euthanasia plan and uses their contact instead to reach Ymir Fritz and obtain control over the Founder.

Levi Ackerman becomes Eren's superior after the military decides that the Survey Corps will take responsibility for him. Eren respects Levi's skill and authority even when he struggles with the consequences of the captain's decisions.

Hange Zoë studies Eren's Titan abilities and becomes one of the officers most directly involved in understanding what he can do. Hange Zoë's scientific enthusiasm initially overwhelms him, but their experiments help establish the conditions and limitations surrounding his transformations. Their relationship deteriorates as Eren becomes increasingly unwilling to cooperate with the Survey Corps leadership.

Jean Kirstein begins as Eren's frequent rival during military training. Jean Kirstein considers Eren reckless and self-righteous, while Eren despises Jean's initial desire for a safe Military Police assignment. Their arguments gradually develop into mutual respect as both endure the Survey Corps' campaigns.

Reiner Braun initially acts as an older-brother figure to Eren during training, offering advice and encouragement. After Reiner is revealed as the Armored Titan responsible for helping destroy Wall Maria, their relationship becomes intensely antagonistic. Years later, Eren's experience in Marley leads him to acknowledge that he and Reiner are alike in disturbing ways: both understand the humanity of the people they attack and move forward regardless.

Annie Leonhart trains Eren in hand-to-hand combat and significantly influences his fighting technique. Her identity as the Female Titan forces Eren to confront the possibility that someone he trained beside could be responsible for killing Survey Corps soldiers, and his initial hesitation to fight her reflects the difficulty he has accepting betrayal from someone he knows personally.

Historia Reiss becomes closely connected to Eren through discoveries involving the royal family and the Founding Titan. Historia Reiss helps him through one of his lowest moments beneath the Reiss chapel, rejecting the idea that he should simply accept sacrifice because others claim it is necessary. Later knowledge of her royal blood makes her politically crucial to plans involving Eren's abilities.

Sasha Blouse and Connie Springer serve alongside Eren from the 104th Training Corps into the Survey Corps. Sasha Blouse's irreverent personality and Connie Springer's loyalty make them part of the peer group Eren repeatedly states he wants to live long lives. Sasha's death after the Liberio raid produces one of the most unsettling reactions of Eren's later period, while Connie eventually joins the effort to stop the Rumbling.

Erwin Smith, commander of the Survey Corps, recognizes Eren as an asset capable of changing humanity's position against the Titans. Erwin Smith repeatedly structures major operations around Eren despite the risk involved, particularly during expeditions and the effort to reclaim Wall Maria.

Eren begins as the viewpoint through which the enclosed world of the Walls is introduced. His hatred of confinement and fascination with the Survey Corps establish the story's earliest questions: what exists beyond humanity's territory, where the Titans came from and why the inhabitants of the Walls know so little about their own world.

The fall of Shiganshina transforms those questions into a personal mission. After entering military training, Eren expects to fight Titans as an ordinary soldier. His transformation during the Battle of Trost instead reveals him as a Titan shifter, making control of his power one of humanity's most valuable potential weapons and placing him at the center of military, religious and political conflict.

The Survey Corps uses Eren's abilities during increasingly ambitious operations. His power becomes vital to attempts to capture enemy Titan shifters, recover lost territory and ultimately reach the basement beneath his childhood home. The basement reveals that humanity survives outside the Walls and that the people of Paradis are Subjects of Ymir whose history is entangled with Marley, Eldia and the power of the Titans.

That discovery fundamentally changes Eren's objective. The ocean that once represented freedom instead becomes a boundary separating Paradis from hostile nations. By the time of the Marley conflict, Eren has stopped waiting for the island's leadership to determine its response. He infiltrates enemy territory independently and forces the Survey Corps into a battle created largely by his actions.

Eren later rejects both Marley's plans for Paradis and Zeke's proposal to sterilize the Subjects of Ymir. After reaching Ymir Fritz through the Paths, he initiates the Rumbling, releasing the enormous Titans within the Walls and sending them beyond Paradis. His stated intention is to destroy the civilizations that could threaten the island.

The final conflict places Eren against many of the friends who spent the series protecting him. Mikasa, Armin, Reiner, Annie, Jean, Connie and their allies pursue him while the Rumbling devastates the world. Mikasa ultimately kills Eren, and his death ends the power of the Titans after Ymir is finally able to relinquish the attachment that had sustained it.

Eren's earliest worldview is simple: Titans took humanity's freedom, so defeating the Titans will restore it. That conviction gives him enormous motivation but little understanding of the people and history surrounding the conflict. Every major revelation expands the number of forces restricting freedom while making it increasingly difficult to identify a single enemy responsible for them.

His development through the Survey Corps repeatedly involves confronting helplessness. He possesses extraordinary power but still fails to save everyone around him. The deaths of comrades force him to question his own judgment, particularly when he must decide whether to trust others or rely on his personal strength.

The discoveries involving his father create a deeper crisis. Eren learns that his Titan powers originated in Grisha's actions and that his father massacred most of the Reiss family to steal the Founder. For a time, he interprets his own existence as the product of crimes that deprived someone else of a power they should have inherited. Historia's refusal to sacrifice him helps break that despair.

Reaching the sea should fulfil the childhood dream that connected Eren, Mikasa and Armin. Instead, Eren looks across it and asks whether killing the enemies on the other side will finally make them free. The moment marks the clearest transition between the adolescent who believed freedom waited beyond the Walls and the older Eren who recognizes that another civilization occupies the space beyond them.

His experiences in Marley deepen rather than resolve that contradiction. Eren lives among the people he once considered enemies and discovers ordinary families, frightened children and soldiers no more inherently monstrous than those on Paradis. Instead of convincing him not to attack, that understanding makes his eventual violence more deliberate: he knows the victims are human and proceeds anyway.

The finale reveals that Eren's obsession with freedom is inseparable from the tragedy he creates. Through the Attack Titan and Founder's relationship with time, memories and the Paths, he experiences portions of past and future as interconnected events. He drives Grisha toward actions his father hesitates to perform and follows a future he has already seen while still insisting that the choices are his own.

Eren's surname is written イェーガー (Yēgā) in Japanese and derives from the German word Jäger, meaning "hunter." English-language releases have rendered the surname as both Yeager and Jaeger, with Kodansha's manga localization generally using "Yeager" while some anime materials use "Jaeger."

The surname's meaning aligns conspicuously with Eren's early role as someone determined to hunt Titans, although the story itself does not present "hunter" as an in-universe explanation for the family's name.

"Eren" is a real given name found particularly in Turkish. Hajime Isayama has discussed choosing names partly for their sound and suitability to the series' European-influenced setting, but the manga does not establish a special in-universe meaning for Eren's given name.

His name later acquires significance through repetition across generations of the story. Eren Kruger, the previous holder of the Attack Titan before Grisha, shares the given name, although Eren Yeager is not named after Kruger within the narrative; Grisha does not learn Kruger's name until after Eren has already been born.
