Armin Arlert

Armin is raised in Shiganshina District by his grandfather after losing his parents at a young age. His family possesses a book describing the world beyond the Walls, including saltwater oceans, deserts, flaming water and fields of ice. Because knowledge about the outside world is heavily restricted, the book gives Armin access to possibilities that most children inside the Walls have never considered.

He shares the book with Eren Yeager, awakening Eren's desire to leave the Walls and see those places personally. For Armin, however, curiosity about the outside world predates the military ambitions that later grow around it. He does not initially dream of fighting Titans; he wants to know whether the landscapes described in the book really exist.

Armin is frequently bullied as a child because of his small build and reluctance to fight back physically. Eren and Mikasa Ackerman often intervene, though Armin resents the assumption that accepting their help means he cannot stand for himself. During the final conflict, Armin and Mikasa become the two childhood friends responsible for stopping Eren, with Armin handling the larger strategic confrontation while Mikasa ultimately makes the personal decision necessary to end it.

Annie Leonhart develops an unusually complicated relationship with Armin. He recognizes that Annie Leonhart shows him small acts of consideration even while presenting herself as detached. Armin ultimately deduces that Annie is the Female Titan and helps construct the attempt to capture her in Stohess. Years later, while Annie remains crystallized, he visits and speaks to her regularly. Erwin Smith recognizes Armin's analytical ability and allows his suggestions to influence major Survey Corps operations. Erwin Smith and Armin share a willingness to consider frightening sacrifices when the strategic situation demands it, though Armin is disturbed by the ease with which the commander sometimes appears able to accept those costs. After both are left near death in Shiganshina, Levi must decide which of them should receive the only available Titan serum. Levi Ackerman initially knows Armin primarily as one of Eren's close companions and a young Survey Corps soldier with unusual tactical instincts. Levi Ackerman increasingly trusts his judgment after seeing several of his plans succeed. Levi's decision to use the Titan serum on Armin rather than Erwin leaves Armin deeply uncomfortable with the idea that his life was judged more valuable than the commander's, even though Levi's decision was more complicated than a simple comparison of usefulness.

Jean Kirstein becomes one of Armin's closest comrades from the 104th. Jean Kirstein has practical leadership instincts that complement Armin's analytical style, and both become increasingly important decision-makers as the original Survey Corps leadership is depleted. Their cooperation is especially effective because Jean can turn Armin's broader plans into immediate battlefield commands.

Connie Springer and Sasha Blouse form part of Armin's core group of 104th comrades. Connie Springer's direct personality often contrasts with Armin's tendency to overthink, while Sasha Blouse contributes to the sense of camaraderie that survives through repeated campaigns. Sasha's death after Liberio deeply affects the entire group and becomes one more sign that their old military friendships cannot remain untouched by the expanding war.

Reiner Braun initially serves as a dependable older-brother figure to Armin and the other cadets. Armin later inherits the Colossal Titan by consuming him.

Hange Zoë increasingly relies on Armin's judgment as the Survey Corps' strategic situation becomes more complicated. Hange Zoë's curiosity and willingness to question established assumptions align naturally with Armin's own approach to problems. After Hange's death, Armin is named the fifteenth commander of the Survey Corps, formally inheriting responsibility for leadership at the most desperate point of the conflict.

Falco Grice and Gabi Braun enter Armin's life through the Marley conflict. Armin tries to understand both children rather than treating them only as enemy soldiers, recognizing parallels between their upbringing and the hatred experienced by children on Paradis.

He is burned almost beyond recognition, but Levi later uses the Titan serum on him. Armin becomes a Pure Titan, consumes Bertholdt and inherits the Colossal Titan.

Reaching the ocean fulfills the dream that first brought Armin and Eren together, yet the basement discoveries transform its meaning. The outside world is real, but it contains nations that view the people of Paradis as enemies. Armin responds by continuing to seek possibilities for communication even as military pressure makes peaceful solutions increasingly difficult.

After the time skip, Armin participates in the attack on Liberio by transforming into the Colossal Titan and destroying the Marleyan naval forces, killing both military personnel and civilians. The act deeply troubles him and forces him to confront how closely the Survey Corps' actions now resemble the destruction once inflicted upon Paradis.

When Eren begins the Rumbling, Armin helps assemble the alliance of former enemies determined to stop him. Following Hange's death, he becomes the fifteenth commander of the Survey Corps and leads the final effort against Eren's Founding Titan.

Armin's earliest struggle is with his belief that intelligence is less valuable than physical courage. He sees Eren charging into fights and Mikasa effortlessly defeating stronger opponents, while his own contributions are more difficult to measure. That insecurity persists even after commanders begin relying on his plans.

Trost gives him the first major evidence that his mind can save people his body cannot. Once he recognizes Eren's transformed state, Armin becomes essential to convincing others that the apparent Titan should not simply be destroyed. After the Titans disappear, he becomes one of the representatives attempting to negotiate between Paradis and the surviving outside world.

The surname Arlert is rendered アルレルト (Arureruto) in Japanese. English-language publications use Arlert, although alternate romanizations such as Arlelt have appeared in some earlier materials.

"Armin" is a real European masculine given name, particularly associated with German-speaking regions. It is often linked historically with Arminius, the Germanic leader who defeated Roman forces at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, although the manga does not establish this historical association as an intentional in-universe meaning.

Hajime Isayama has explained that he chose the name partly because the repeated initial sound in "Armin Arlert" was easy to remember and had an appealing rhythm. The European character of the name also fits the naming patterns used throughout the society inside the Walls.

Unlike Titan titles or military ranks, Armin's name carries no special supernatural meaning in the narrative. Its significance instead comes from his identity as one of the three childhood friends whose decisions shape the entire conflict.
