Jean Kirstein

Jean is blunt, practical, skeptical, and initially self-interested. Unlike cadets motivated by revenge or grand ideals, he openly admits that he wants to join the Military Police because life in the interior is safer.

His pragmatism also makes him perceptive. Jean notices weaknesses in plans and people that more idealistic characters overlook, and Marco Bott recognizes that Jean's awareness of fear makes him capable of understanding frightened soldiers.

Jean can be hot-tempered, particularly around Eren, whose impulsive idealism irritates him. Their arguments often expose the tension between Jean's caution and Eren's willingness to risk everything for an objective.

Over time, Jean develops into a capable leader without losing his instinct for self-preservation. His courage matters precisely because he remains conscious of what he could lose and repeatedly chooses to act anyway.

Jean graduates sixth in the 104th Cadet Corps and demonstrates particularly strong aptitude with ODM gear. His spatial awareness allows him to navigate complicated urban environments efficiently while conserving gas.

He has strong tactical instincts and can rapidly assess changing battlefield conditions. This makes him effective at directing less experienced soldiers, especially when formal commanders are unavailable.

Jean is also proficient with firearms and anti-personnel equipment after the Survey Corps begins fighting human opponents. His adaptability allows him to transition from Titan combat to urban firefights and later warfare involving modern military technology.

By the later stages of the story, he is among the Survey Corps' most experienced surviving conventional soldiers, capable of fighting Titans, human opponents, and Titan shifters while contributing to tactical decisions.

Jean begins as one of Eren's most outspoken cadet rivals. Their opposing goals create frequent arguments, but the battle of Trost forces Jean to confront actual death and responsibility far earlier than expected.

Marco's death becomes decisive in Jean's development. Although he has earned the right to enter the Military Police, Jean instead joins the Survey Corps because he can no longer justify retreating into safety while others continue fighting.

He subsequently participates in most major Survey Corps operations, including expeditions beyond the Walls, the struggle against the royal government, the battle to retake Shiganshina, and the conflict with Marley.

During the Rumbling, Jean is offered another opportunity to choose comfort over danger. He ultimately rejects it and joins the alliance attempting to stop Eren, despite understanding that success may turn people on Paradis against him.

Jean survives the final battle and later joins the diplomatic delegation attempting to negotiate peace with Paradis.

Eren Yeager is Jean's longtime rival and comrade. Their arguments begin during cadet training, but Jean respects Eren more deeply than their constant hostility suggests.

Marco Bott is Jean's close friend and one of the first people to identify his potential as a leader. Marco's death fundamentally changes the direction of Jean's life.

Mikasa Ackerman is the object of Jean's longstanding attraction, beginning almost immediately after they meet.

Armin Arlert becomes a trusted comrade whose strategic thinking complements Jean's practical battlefield judgment.

Connie Springer is one of Jean's closest surviving friends from the 104th. Their long shared service gives them a particularly natural camaraderie.

Sasha Blouse is another close member of Jean's cadet group. Her death affects Jean deeply and becomes part of the emotional burden carried by the surviving 104th members.

Reiner Braun begins as Jean's trusted comrade. Jean later struggles with intense anger toward Reiner after learning the truth about Marco, but eventually fights beside him against the Rumbling.

Pieck Finger becomes Jean's ally during the final conflict despite their earlier positions on opposing sides.
