Personality
Personality
Chaoji is earnest, emotional and intensely devoted to people he regards as allies. Before becoming an Exorcist, he idealizes the Black Order's fighters as almost superhuman servants of God. Discovering that they joke, fear death and struggle with uncertainty surprises him.
His loyalty can become rigid. Chaoji divides the war strongly between the people fighting for the Order and those he considers enemies, making it difficult for him to accept actions that appear to betray that cause.
He also carries survivor's guilt from the journey to Japan. The losses suffered by Anita's crew leave him determined to ensure that their sacrifices have meaning.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Chaoji becomes an Accommodator for an equipment-type Innocence that manifests as a pair of connected bracelets on his left wrist. The weapon dramatically increases the physical strength of his left arm.
Its first major activation allows Chaoji to pull Allen Walker, Lavi and Yu Kanda out of a seemingly bottomless fall inside Noah's Ark and hurl them to safety with a single pull.
After joining the Black Order formally, Chaoji receives Exorcist training under Froi Tiedoll. His abilities remain centered on enhanced physical strength rather than the complex specialized effects of some other Innocence.
Story Role
Story Role
Chaoji serves aboard Anita's ship during the Exorcists' journey toward Edo. He witnesses the crew's determination to help Cross Marian's allies despite the enormous danger posed by Akuma.
The battle with Eshi destroys the ship and kills most of its crew. Chaoji is one of only three crew members to survive, leaving him deeply affected by the sacrifices of Anita and the others.
Inside Noah's Ark, Chaoji accompanies the Exorcists despite initially lacking an Anti-Akuma weapon. His compatibility with Innocence emerges during the crisis, and he subsequently joins the Black Order as an Exorcist under Tiedoll.
Chaoji's admiration for Allen later collapses when Allen helps Yu Kanda and Alma Karma escape Central's control. Viewing the act as a betrayal of the people who died fighting the Noah and Akuma, Chaoji becomes openly hostile toward Allen.
Relationships
Relationships
Anita is Chaoji's employer and captain during the voyage toward Japan. Her death and the destruction of her crew leave Chaoji determined to honor the people who sacrificed themselves for the Exorcists.
Allen Walker is initially one of the Exorcists Chaoji admires. Chaoji later regards Allen's decision to aid Kanda and Alma as a betrayal and turns against the person he once respected.
Yu Kanda is among the Exorcists Chaoji accompanies through Noah's Ark. Kanda's later actions surrounding Alma contribute to Chaoji's loss of faith in Allen.
Lavi is another of Chaoji's companions inside the Ark and one of the three Exorcists Chaoji saves when his Innocence first activates.
Froi Tiedoll becomes Chaoji's General after he formally joins the Black Order as an Exorcist.
