Zenitsu Agatsuma

Zenitsu grows up without parents or a stable family to rely upon. By adolescence, his desperation for companionship makes him particularly vulnerable to women who show him affection. He falls deeply into debt after spending money on a girl who ultimately leaves him for another man, leaving him with no realistic means of repayment.

His circumstances change when Jigoro Kuwajima, the former Thunder Hashira, takes responsibility for his debt and brings him into training. Jigoro becomes the closest thing Zenitsu has to a grandfather, pushing him through the physical and technical discipline required to learn Thunder Breathing even when Zenitsu repeatedly attempts to escape.

Zenitsu struggles badly with the style's broader curriculum. Thunder Breathing traditionally contains six forms, but he proves capable of mastering only the First Form. Rather than abandoning him, Jigoro insists that proficiency in one technique can still be meaningful if Zenitsu refines it beyond ordinary limits. Zenitsu consequently devotes himself to repeating the First Form until its speed and precision far exceed those of a beginner.

Another student under Jigoro, Kaigaku, possesses almost the opposite problem: he learns the later Thunder Breathing forms but cannot perform the First. Their shared apprenticeship creates a difficult relationship shaped by Zenitsu's insecurity and Kaigaku's contempt for him.

Zenitsu's distinctive yellow hair originates during his training rather than from birth. His hair was originally black, but an incident in which he is struck by lightning changes it to its familiar yellow-orange coloration. The same training period establishes his extraordinary lower-body conditioning, which becomes essential to the explosive acceleration required by Thunder Breathing.

He eventually survives Final Selection and joins the Demon Slayer Corps in the same generation as Tanjirou, Inosuke, Kanao Tsuyuri and Genya Shinazugawa. Despite successfully passing a test in which numerous candidates die, Zenitsu remains convinced that he is weak and expects nearly every mission to kill him.

Zenitsu is anxious, emotionally expressive and extremely afraid of death. He frequently assumes the worst possible outcome before a battle begins, becomes overwhelmed when confronted by demons and openly questions why he joined an organization whose members routinely die young. The official anime identifies extreme cowardice as one of his defining characteristics.

His fear is not evidence that he lacks moral courage. Zenitsu can remain loyal to someone even while terrified and has repeatedly accepted injury rather than betray a friend. One of the clearest early examples occurs before he even knows what is inside Tanjirou's wooden box: hearing Tanjirou say that its contents matter more than his life is enough for Zenitsu to defend it against Inosuke.

He has extremely low confidence in his own swordsmanship. Because he can use only one of Thunder Breathing's standard forms, Zenitsu interprets himself as a failed student despite having refined that technique to exceptional levels. Praise often embarrasses or confuses him because his self-image remains rooted in the training sessions where he repeatedly fell short.

His behavior toward women is considerably less restrained. Zenitsu desperately wants to marry, becomes infatuated easily and can react with intense jealousy when other boys receive attention. His attraction to Nezuko quickly becomes especially strong after he meets her, although his feelings gradually coexist with genuine loyalty to her and Tanjirou rather than remaining a superficial crush.

Zenitsu is also perceptive in ways his anxious behavior can obscure. His hearing allows him to notice dishonesty, emotional changes and physical irregularities, and he can distinguish subtle differences in the sounds produced by humans and demons. The official anime specifically notes that he can differentiate people and demons through sound.

As the story progresses, he becomes more capable of acting without losing consciousness first. Fear never completely disappears from his personality, but experience teaches him that courage does not require an absence of fear. His most important later battles come when he remains fully aware of both the danger and his reasons for fighting.

Zenitsu is 164.5 cm tall and weighs 58 kg. He has a relatively slight build compared with several other Demon Slayers, although intensive Thunder Breathing training has given his legs considerable strength.

His speed is exceptional even among trained Demon Slayers. Thunder Breathing, Seventh Form: Honoikazuchi no Kami is an original technique created by Zenitsu rather than one of the six forms taught through Jigoro's traditional Thunder Breathing curriculum. He launches himself with immense speed while the attack takes the visual form of a lightning dragon, delivering a decisive high-speed slash.

The Seventh Form is especially important because Zenitsu develops it himself despite spending much of his life believing that mastering only one inherited form made him inadequate. Its creation proves that he has advanced from reproducing his teacher's techniques to contributing a new form to Thunder Breathing.

Tanjirou Kamado becomes one of Zenitsu's closest friends after the two meet during an early Demon Slayer mission. Zenitsu initially overwhelms Tanjirou Kamado with complaints about dying and his desire to marry before that happens, but quickly demonstrates deep loyalty. Before knowing that Nezuko is inside Tanjirou's box, Zenitsu protects it because he heard Tanjirou say that its contents were precious to him. Their friendship develops through repeated missions, recovery periods and shared losses.

Nezuko Kamado becomes the focus of Zenitsu's strongest romantic feelings almost immediately after he sees her. Nezuko Kamado's beauty initially inspires exaggerated infatuation, but Zenitsu also treats her safety as genuinely important and defends her despite knowing she is a demon. His exceptional hearing allows him to recognize early that she differs from demons who consume humans. The manga's ending establishes that Zenitsu and Nezuko eventually form a family, with descendants of the two appearing in the modern era.

Inosuke Hashibira initially clashes with Zenitsu during the mission at the Tsuzumi Mansion. Inosuke Hashibira's aggression and enthusiasm for danger are almost the exact opposite of Zenitsu's personality, producing frequent arguments once the two begin traveling together. Despite the friction, their shared experiences with Tanjirou turn them into close companions who trust one another in battle.

Jigoro Kuwajima is Zenitsu's master and surrogate grandfather. Jigoro Kuwajima pays Zenitsu's debts, takes him into training and refuses to abandon him when he can master only the First Form of Thunder Breathing. He tells Zenitsu that perfecting one thing is enough if he takes it as far as possible, a lesson that becomes the technical foundation of Zenitsu's entire fighting style. Jigoro's death after Kaigaku becomes a demon devastates Zenitsu and becomes the reason for his abrupt change in demeanor before the Infinity Castle battle.

Kaigaku trains alongside Zenitsu under Jigoro and is effectively his senior fellow disciple. Kaigaku despises Zenitsu's perceived weakness, while Zenitsu recognizes that Kaigaku can perform the Thunder Breathing forms he himself cannot. Their contrasting abilities mean that Jigoro sees the pair as complementary heirs to Thunder Breathing rather than choosing only one. Kaigaku later becomes a demon and succeeds Gyutaro and Daki as Upper Rank Six. Zenitsu confronts and defeats him inside the Infinity Castle using the Seventh Form he created himself.

Kyojuro Rengoku fights alongside Zenitsu during the Mugen Train mission. Although Zenitsu spends much of the incident separated from Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira's commitment to protecting every passenger makes a strong impression on all three younger Demon Slayers. Rengoku's death becomes one of the losses contributing to their determination to grow stronger.

Tengen Uzui brings Zenitsu, Tanjirou and Inosuke into the Entertainment District in search of his missing wives. Tengen Uzui's confidence, physical strength and flamboyance initially irritate Zenitsu, but the mission places them within the same combat team against Upper Rank Six. Zenitsu's Thunder Breathing becomes particularly important during the battle against Daki. The official game description identifies him as infiltrating the Entertainment District alongside Tanjirou and Inosuke and gaining new Thunder Breathing techniques through rigorous training.

Shinobu Kocho oversees the Butterfly Mansion where Zenitsu rehabilitates after Mount Natagumo. Shinobu Kocho's rehabilitation program forces him through Total Concentration training that helps improve his physical endurance and breathing control.

Aoi Kanzaki participates directly in Zenitsu's rehabilitation at the Butterfly Mansion. Aoi Kanzaki has little patience for his complaints, while Zenitsu reacts to the female staff with his usual enthusiasm. The rehabilitation work nevertheless contributes materially to the abilities he uses in subsequent missions.

Chuntaro, also called Ukogi, is the sparrow assigned to Zenitsu instead of the Kasugai crow used by most Demon Slayers. Chuntaro repeatedly tries to communicate mission information despite Zenitsu initially being unable to understand him and becomes a persistent companion through Zenitsu's service.

Daki becomes one of Zenitsu's principal opponents during the Entertainment District battle. Daki initially attracts his attention because of her appearance, but her cruelty toward a young girl immediately changes his attitude. While unconscious, Zenitsu fights her alongside Inosuke and helps create the conditions required to sever her head.

Zenitsu enters the story after Final Selection as one of the young swordsmen from Tanjirou's generation. His introduction deliberately contrasts with Tanjirou's determination: despite having survived the same lethal selection process, Zenitsu is convinced that almost any ordinary assignment will result in his death.

The Tsuzumi Mansion provides the first demonstration of the gap between his conscious self-image and actual ability. Extreme terror causes him to lose consciousness while facing a demon. Once panic stops interfering with his training, he performs Thunderclap and Flash with enough speed and precision to end the confrontation immediately.

His defense of Tanjirou's box is equally important. Inosuke attacks the box because he knows it contains a demon, while Zenitsu protects it despite having already heard enough to understand the same thing. His reason is simple: Tanjirou told him it mattered more than his own life. The incident establishes that Zenitsu's fear does not override loyalty.

Mount Natagumo forces him into a prolonged battle without Tanjirou or Inosuke nearby. Poison from a spider demon gradually transforms his body while he attempts to complete the attack necessary to survive. The fight also reveals more of his training under Jigoro and why mastering only one Thunder Breathing form caused such deep insecurity.

After recovering at the Butterfly Mansion, Zenitsu joins Tanjirou and Inosuke aboard the Mugen Train. Enmu's dream technique reveals the emotional contrast between Zenitsu's desires and Tanjirou's: Zenitsu imagines a peaceful romantic life with Nezuko rather than battle or achievement.

The Entertainment District gives Zenitsu a much larger combat role. He infiltrates the district in disguise, encounters Daki before the others fully identify her and later fights alongside Inosuke while Tanjirou and Tengen confront the connected Upper Rank demons. The official game material describes this version of Zenitsu as having developed a new application of Thunder Breathing after rigorous training.

Hashira Training initially finds Zenitsu behaving much as he always has, particularly around difficult physical training. A message delivered during this period, however, produces an abrupt change. He becomes quiet and intensely focused, declining to explain fully what he has learned before preparing himself for the coming battle.

The Infinity Castle brings his personal history to the foreground when he encounters Kaigaku, his former senior fellow student. Kaigaku has become Upper Rank Six, and Jigoro has already died after taking responsibility for his pupil's transformation. Zenitsu fights fully conscious rather than relying upon his old fainting response.

He defeats Kaigaku with Honoikazuchi no Kami, the Seventh Form of Thunder Breathing that he developed himself. The victory resolves the insecurity created by his inability to learn the other traditional forms: Zenitsu does not become Jigoro's worthy student by copying everything he was taught, but by perfecting his own path through the style.

Zenitsu later rejoins the surviving Demon Slayers in the battle against Muzan, continuing to fight despite accumulated injuries until sunrise ends the confrontation.

Zenitsu begins with a profound mismatch between competence and self-perception. He survives Final Selection, learns a difficult Breathing Style and possesses extraordinary senses, yet remains certain that he is fundamentally useless. Every mistake reinforces that belief while every success is dismissed as something achieved only because he was unconscious.

Jigoro's lesson about mastering one thing becomes the foundation for correcting that view. Zenitsu cannot perform five of Thunder Breathing's six traditional forms, but his First Form eventually becomes far faster than an ordinary practitioner's. His weakness creates specialization rather than permanent inadequacy.

His friendships also change how he deals with fear. Traveling with Tanjirou and Inosuke means there are increasingly people whose lives matter to him enough that retreat is not always acceptable. He still complains and panics, but more of his decisions are made around protecting companions rather than simply surviving.

Nezuko gives that protectiveness a particularly personal focus. Zenitsu's early infatuation is exaggerated and superficial in presentation, but his actions toward her increasingly demonstrate loyalty independent of whether she responds romantically. He accepts her existence as a demon much earlier than many members of the Corps.

The Entertainment District marks substantial progress because Zenitsu operates effectively as part of a coordinated high-level battle rather than simply defeating an isolated demon. His repeated Thunderclap and Flash variants demonstrate that years of refining one technique have produced tactical flexibility within an apparently narrow skill set.

The message he receives during Hashira Training changes him more sharply than any previous event. Learning that Jigoro killed himself after Kaigaku became a demon removes the emotional safety net provided by the grandfather figure who had always believed in him. For once, Zenitsu does not respond with public panic. He chooses deliberately to settle the unfinished responsibility between Jigoro's two students.

His battle with Kaigaku completes his movement from unconscious competence to conscious confidence. Zenitsu remains afraid and emotionally wounded, but he fights awake, evaluates his opponent clearly and uses a technique that exists because of his own creativity rather than merely Jigoro's instruction.

Zenitsu's name is written 我妻 善逸. His surname, Agatsuma (我妻), combines 我, meaning "I" or "self," with 妻, meaning "wife." Read literally, the characters can suggest "my wife," an especially conspicuous construction for a character preoccupied with marriage and romance.

His given name Zenitsu (善逸) contains 善, commonly associated with "good," "virtue" or "goodness," and 逸, which can convey ideas such as excellence, deviation or surpassing the ordinary.
