Yuyu Yayahara

Yuyu is energetic, sociable, fashion-conscious, and far less formal than the traditional image of a Gotei 13 lieutenant. She has adopted a gyaru-inspired style from the Human World and even uses paid leave to visit the Human World so that she can tan. According to information supplied by Tite Kubo, the tan acquired by her Gigai carries over to her Soul body.

She is also an enthusiastic admirer of Ichigo Kurosaki. Upon meeting him, she reacts with excitement rather than the professional reserve expected from a lieutenant, quickly drawing attention to herself among the assembled Shinigami.

Yuyu's concern with fashion extends directly to her Zanpakutō. She likes the appearance of its released form enough that she prefers keeping it in Shikai as much as possible, despite members of other divisions disapproving of the practice.

As lieutenant of the Eighth Division, Yuyu is a high-ranking Shinigami. The name and release command of her Zanpakutō have not yet been revealed, but its Shikai has been shown and further explained by Tite Kubo.

Yuyu's colored fingernails are themselves her Shikai. In combat, she extends her hands and curls her fingers into a shape resembling jaws lined with teeth. This produces the apparition of an enormous bear's head behind her, which attacks according to the gesture.

Against the creatures emerging from Hell, the manifested bear demonstrates enormous biting strength, cleanly decapitating one Jigoku no Gaki and tearing through another's body. The technique suggests an animal or predation motif, although the precise mechanics and limits of her Zanpakutō remain unexplained. No Bankai has been revealed.

Yuyu appears in the period twelve years after the Quincy conflict as the lieutenant of the Eighth Division, where Lisa has taken command as captain. She is one of several officers whose positions illustrate how the Gotei 13 has changed since the earlier storyline.

She accompanies the group of lieutenants sent into the Human World for the Jogimen Reibaku, part of the Konsō Reisai being conducted for Jūshirō Ukitake. There she meets Ichigo and reacts enthusiastically to seeing the Substitute Shinigami in person.

When Jigoku no Gaki begin appearing in the Human World, Yuyu joins the battle and reveals her Shikai. Her bear-like manifestation destroys the creatures with startling brutality, placing her among the Shinigami who directly witness the growing connection between Hell and the Human World.

Lisa Yadōmaru is Yuyu's captain in the Eighth Division. Yuyu serves as her lieutenant, occupying the position once held by Lisa herself and later by Nanao during earlier periods of the division's history.

Ichigo Kurosaki is someone Yuyu greatly admires. She becomes visibly excited upon finally meeting him during the gathering in the Human World and speaks to him with considerably more enthusiasm than formality.

Jūshirō Ukitake is the former captain whose Konsō Reisai leads Yuyu and the other lieutenants to undertake the Hollow-capturing ritual in the Human World, although no personal relationship between them has been established.
