Yumi Komagata

Yumi is intelligent, composed and intensely loyal. Her years as a high-ranking courtesan left her socially sophisticated and well informed, allowing her to converse confidently about political and social issues.

She is deeply in love with Shishio and accepts his scarred appearance without hesitation. Her devotion is not merely superficial admiration for his strength; she remains attentive to his physical limitations and worries when he pushes his damaged body too far.

Yumi also cares for Soujirou. Although she sometimes becomes frustrated by his unreadable smile, she treats him more like a younger brother than a disposable subordinate and respects his need to make choices for himself.

Yumi has no established swordsmanship and openly recognizes that she cannot contribute to Shishio's cause through combat. Her abilities instead come from education, social experience and practical intelligence.

She is knowledgeable about contemporary affairs and can operate modern communications equipment such as the telegraph. More importantly, she understands Shishio's unusual medical condition and closely tracks the time he spends fighting.

Her familiarity with his injuries makes her one of the people best able to recognize when his body temperature is approaching dangerous levels.

Yumi becomes disillusioned with the Meiji government's treatment and legal perception of women in prostitution and eventually joins Shishio. She becomes his lover and remains beside him as his organization expands.

During Kenshin's assault on Shishio's headquarters, Yumi accompanies Shishio through the final stages of the confrontation and repeatedly worries about the length of time he spends fighting.

When Kenshin gains an opening against Shishio, Yumi places herself between them. Shishio drives his sword through Yumi's body to strike Kenshin as well. Rather than condemning him, Yumi dies satisfied that she has finally been useful to him in battle.

After Shishio's own death, the manga depicts Shishio, Yumi and Hōji reunited in the afterlife, with Shishio immediately deciding to attempt the conquest of Hell.

Makoto Shishio is Yumi's lover and the person to whom she devotes herself. Their relationship is reciprocal, and Shishio recognizes that she loves him despite the severe burns covering his body.

Soujirou Seta is treated by Yumi as a younger-brother figure. She worries about his emotional condition and respects his decision to leave Shishio's organization after losing to Kenshin.

Houji Sadojima is another of Shishio's closest followers and works alongside Yumi within his organization.

Kenshin Himura is the principal enemy of the man Yumi loves. Yumi ultimately intervenes physically during Kenshin and Shishio's battle, sacrificing herself in the confrontation.

Honjou Kamatari is another Juppongatana member devoted to Shishio and competes with Yumi for his attention.
