Soujirou Seta

Soujirou is unfailingly polite, soft-spoken and usually smiling. His outward pleasantness is unsettling because it persists during assassination and combat. He suppresses anger and sadness so completely that opponents struggle to detect the kenki normally produced by hostile emotion.

His worldview initially follows Shishio's doctrine almost without question: the strong survive and the weak are destroyed. Soujirou treats this not as cruelty but as a basic rule of existence.

His emotional suppression is nevertheless learned rather than natural. The calm smile hides experiences he has never properly confronted, and Kenshin's refusal to accept Shishio's philosophy eventually creates a contradiction Soujirou cannot simply dismiss.

Soujirou is a prodigious swordsman whose greatest attribute is speed. His natural talent earns him the title Tenken, and Shishio considers him his strongest fighter.

Shukuchi allows Soujirou to move so quickly that he appears to vanish from an opponent's field of vision. Lesser stages are described according to how many steps they fall short of true Shukuchi, while the complete technique gives him extraordinary freedom of movement.

His ultimate technique, Shuntensatsu, combines Shukuchi with battōjutsu to produce an almost instantaneous killing attack.

Soujirou's suppressed emotions provide another advantage. Because he emits almost no readable fighting intent, experienced swordsmen cannot anticipate his attacks through the subtle emotional signals normally present in combat.

Soujirou first demonstrates his importance when Shishio assigns him a major political assassination. He kills Toshimichi Ōkubo before the historical assassins who intended to murder the statesman can carry out their own attack.

He later encounters Kenshin at Shingetsu Village. Their first duel ends without a clear victory when Kenshin's sakabatō and Soujirou's sword both become unusable during their exchange of battōjutsu.

Their second battle forces Soujirou to confront the beliefs he has carried since childhood. He reveals that he was abused by his family and learned to smile to reduce the beatings. After meeting the fugitive Shishio as a child, Soujirou ultimately killed his family when they attempted to murder him, accepting Shishio's doctrine that the strong survive.

Kenshin's refusal to accept that doctrine destabilizes Soujirou emotionally. Once his suppressed feelings return, Kenshin can finally read his movements and defeats Shuntensatsu with Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki. Soujirou subsequently leaves Shishio and begins wandering Japan in search of his own answer about how to live.

Makoto Shishio is Soujirou's mentor and formative father figure. Shishio shelters with him when Soujirou is a child, gives him a wakizashi and teaches him the worldview that dominates his adolescence.

Yumi Komagata treats Soujirou with concern resembling that of an older sister, and he trusts her enough to speak openly with her after his battle with Kenshin.

Kenshin Himura is Soujirou's principal opponent. Their battles force Soujirou to question Shishio's philosophy and confront emotions he has suppressed since childhood.
