Personality
Personality
Yolanda is composed, perceptive and business-minded. She speaks politely and rarely displays the volatility common among Roanapur's criminals, but her calm demeanor does not make her permissive. She runs the church firmly and expects its members to respect her decisions.
She has little tolerance for Eda drinking alcohol inside the chapel and prefers tea herself. Her interactions with customers show similar standards: profit matters, but she understands that maintaining reliable relationships is more valuable than winning every individual negotiation.
Yolanda quickly recognizes Rock's intelligence when he notices details of the church's smuggling operation and uses them during negotiations. Rather than taking offense, she appreciates his awareness and understands why Dutch recruited him.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Yolanda primarily operates as an organizer, negotiator and information broker. The Rip-Off Church maintains contacts throughout Roanapur, handles illegal imports and can provide weapons, forged documentation and intelligence to clients.
Although she normally leaves combat to Eda and Rico, Yolanda is proficient with a customized gold-colored Desert Eagle. She can handle the heavy handgun one-handed and fire it accurately despite its substantial recoil.
Her broader strength is institutional. The church survives among organizations such as Hotel Moscow and the Hong Kong Triad because Yolanda understands how to trade information, contraband and favors without allowing her operation to become an easy target.
Story Role
Story Role
Yolanda is introduced through Lagoon Company's dealings with the Rip-Off Church. When Rock recognizes suspicious activity associated with the church and uses his observations to negotiate, Yolanda responds favorably to his approach and establishes a more workable business relationship.
She remains largely behind the scenes while Eda handles the church's more dangerous fieldwork. During the Greenback Jane incident, the church becomes involved after Jane seeks help, placing Yolanda's organization near another major conflict involving the Lagoon Company.
Yolanda is aware of Eda's CIA connection and permits her intelligence activities while benefiting from the arrangement. This makes the Rip-Off Church more than a simple smuggling front: its information network also intersects with American intelligence operations in Roanapur.
Relationships
Relationships
Eda works under Yolanda at the Rip-Off Church. Yolanda can restrain Eda's temper more effectively than most people and is also aware that Eda is secretly working for the CIA.
Rico is another member of the Rip-Off Church and handles armed work alongside Eda. Yolanda leaves much of the organization's direct fighting to Rico and Eda.
Rokuro Okajima impresses Yolanda with his observational and negotiating skills. She recognizes Rokuro Okajima as a useful addition to the Lagoon Company rather than dismissing him because he lacks its other members' combat abilities.
Dutch conducts business with Yolanda through the Lagoon Company. Yolanda understands Dutch's need for reliable access to weapons and contraband while ensuring that the church profits from those transactions.
