Ultear Milkovich

Ultear initially appears calm, manipulative, ambitious, and willing to sacrifice other people to achieve her objectives. She is excellent at concealing her intentions behind a composed public persona and operates comfortably within organizations whose other members do not understand her true loyalties.

Her ruthlessness is tied to a deeply damaged understanding of her own childhood. Ultear believes that the past can eventually be rewritten, allowing her to justify terrible actions in the present because she expects to erase them once she reaches the magical world she seeks.

She shows a much gentler side toward Meredy, whom she protects and raises after finding her as a child. This relationship survives even when Ultear's self-hatred becomes severe.

Ultear's principal ability is Arc of Time, one of the Lost Magics. It manipulates the "time" of nonliving objects, allowing her to restore broken structures, rapidly age materials, reverse physical damage, or move objects through different states.

She often channels this magic through a crystal orb that can be shattered and reconstructed repeatedly, creating unpredictable projectile attacks. Living beings cannot ordinarily be directly aged or restored through standard Arc of Time.

Ultear also knows Ice-Make, inherited through her mother's magical lineage, along with Transformation Magic, Thought Projection, telepathy, and other advanced techniques.

Her ultimate spell, Last Ages, converts the caster's remaining lifespan into an attempt to reverse time across the world. Ultear uses it during the Eclipse crisis believing she may be able to prevent catastrophic deaths; the spell turns back only one minute while rapidly aging her body, but that minute allows numerous people to avoid otherwise fatal outcomes.

Ultear first appears within the Magic Council, where she and Siegrain subtly encourage the use of Etherion against the Tower of Heaven.

She is secretly a member of Grimoire Heart and eventually becomes the leader of its Seven Kin of Purgatory. Her long-term objective is tied to Hades's plan to awaken Zeref and reach the Ultimate Magic World.

Ultear's personal history intersects directly with Ul. Ultear is Ul's daughter. As a sick child with dangerously excessive magic power, she is taken to a magical research institution whose researchers falsely tell Ul that her daughter died. Ultear later escapes, sees her mother raising Gray and Lyon, and mistakenly concludes that Ul abandoned her for replacement children.

During the Tenrou Island conflict, her fight with Gray forces the truth about Ul to the surface. Realizing that her mother had always loved her breaks the belief that had justified many of Ultear's crimes. She turns against Grimoire Heart and later forms Crime Sorcière with Jellal and Meredy to seek atonement.

Ul is Ultear's mother. Ultear spends much of her life believing Ul abandoned her, only to discover that the research facility deceived both of them and that Ul never stopped loving her.

Meredy is Ultear's foster daughter and closest family bond. Ultear rescues her after the destruction of her home and raises her within Grimoire Heart.

Jellal Fernandes is one of the people Ultear manipulates as part of Grimoire Heart's long-term plans. Years later, they establish Crime Sorcière together and pursue atonement.

Gray Fullbuster initially represents Ultear's resentment toward her mother, but their battle on Tenrou Island becomes crucial to her understanding of Ul's true feelings.

Hades becomes Ultear's guild master in Grimoire Heart and teaches her to pursue the Ultimate Magic World.

Zeref is the mage Ultear believes must be awakened for Grimoire Heart's goal to succeed.
