Ul

Ul is confident, blunt, compassionate, and demanding as a teacher. She frequently argues with Lyon and Gray, but her discipline comes from genuine concern for their growth rather than a desire to dominate them.

She encourages independence in her pupils. Instead of teaching them to reproduce her own creations, Ul insists that Ice-Make mages should develop individual styles reflecting their personalities and imaginations.

Motherhood and loss also shape her behavior. She directs much of the affection she carries toward the children in her life into raising Lyon and Gray almost as sons.

Ul is a master of Ice-Make, a form of Molding Magic that creates solid ice constructs. She can produce weapons, structures, restraints, and other shapes almost instantly, combining enormous magical reserves with refined control.

Her power is vastly greater than that of Gray and Lyon during their childhood training. Even the ambitious Lyon believes surpassing Ul would prove that he has reached the highest level attainable by an Ice-Make mage.

Ul also knows Iced Shell, an extreme sealing spell that converts the caster's body into ice and permanently traps a target. The technique is exceptionally powerful but demands an irreversible sacrifice from its user.

Ul's story is told primarily through Gray and Lyon's past. She initially travels with Lyon before encountering the ruins left by the demon Deliora and finding Gray as the only surviving child determined to pursue the creature responsible.

She accepts Gray as a second pupil and trains both boys in Ice-Make. Gray's obsession with revenge eventually leads him to confront Deliora before he is ready, forcing Ul to intervene.

Ul uses Iced Shell to seal Deliora, sacrificing her physical body and becoming the ice imprisoning the demon. Gray survives believing himself responsible for her loss, while Lyon later attempts to release Deliora so he can defeat the monster Ul could only seal.

A later revelation establishes that Ultear Milkovich, whom Ul had believed lost to her in childhood, is actually her daughter. Ul had been deceived into believing Ultear had died after entrusting her to a magical research facility.

Gray Fullbuster is Ul's younger pupil. She rescues him after Deliora's attack, teaches him Ice-Make, and comes to regard him as family.

Lyon Vastia is Ul's first pupil. He idolizes her power so intensely that surpassing her becomes the goal around which he structures much of his youth.

Ultear Milkovich is connected to Ul by a major family revelation: Ultear is her daughter, whom Ul was falsely led to believe had died.

Deliora is the demon whose destruction of Gray's home ultimately brings Ul into the confrontation that defines her legacy.
