Jellal Fernandes

Jellal's personality is shaped by severe childhood trauma and manipulation. As a child he is compassionate, courageous, and protective, becoming one of the people who keeps hope alive among prisoners forced to construct the Tower of Heaven.

His later behavior changes drastically. He becomes calculating, charismatic, ruthless, and willing to sacrifice people he once cared about for an ideological objective. He is skilled at inspiring loyalty while concealing the degree to which others are being manipulated.

After recovering from the influence that distorted his life, Jellal is overwhelmed by guilt. His later personality becomes restrained and self-punishing, with much of his life dedicated to atoning for his crimes rather than seeking personal happiness.

Jellal is one of the series' most powerful independent mages. Heavenly Body Magic allows him to manipulate celestial energy for tremendous speed and destructive attacks.

Meteor surrounds his body in magical energy and accelerates him to extreme speeds, making him difficult to track in close combat. Grand Chariot summons seven magical pillars arranged after the Big Dipper and crashes them down with enormous force.

Sema draws a meteor toward the battlefield, giving Jellal one of his most destructive spells. He can also employ binding magic, telepathy, Thought Projection, and other advanced techniques reflecting an unusually broad magical education.

As Siegrain, Jellal creates a Thought Projection containing a portion of his magic power and uses it as an independent identity within the Magic Council. The projection's status allows him to help manipulate the Council into firing Etherion at the Tower of Heaven.

Jellal's history begins when he and several other children are enslaved by a cult constructing the Tower of Heaven as part of an attempt to revive Zeref. Alongside Erza and their friends, he participates in plans to escape.

Ultear Milkovich, acting while disguised as Zeref's influence, manipulates the imprisoned Jellal and convinces him that completing the R-System will grant him freedom. Jellal subsequently takes control of the Tower and continues its construction for years.

During the Tower of Heaven arc, Erza returns to confront the place where she spent her childhood. Jellal intends to use the completed system as part of his plan involving Zeref, while his Thought Projection Siegrain manipulates the Magic Council into providing Etherion's enormous magical energy.

Jellal survives the destruction of the tower but later reappears suffering from severe memory loss. After aiding the Allied Forces against Oración Seis, he is arrested for his crimes. Ultear and Meredy later free him, and the three establish Crime Sorcière to hunt dark guilds and oppose Zeref while atoning for their own pasts.

Erza Scarlet is Jellal's childhood friend and the person with whom he shares his strongest emotional bond. Their relationship survives enslavement, manipulation, conflict, guilt, and years of separation.

Ultear Milkovich manipulates Jellal while he is imprisoned at the Tower of Heaven, helping create the corrupted personality that controls the tower. She later joins him in Crime Sorcière as both seek atonement.

Meredy becomes Jellal's fellow Crime Sorcière member and one of his closest partners in the effort to destroy dark guilds.

Simon, Sho, Wally Buchanan, and Millianna are fellow children imprisoned with Jellal and Erza in the Tower of Heaven.

Zeref becomes the figure around whom Jellal's corrupted plans are built, though the "voice of Zeref" directing Jellal is actually part of Ultear's manipulation rather than Zeref himself.

Mystogan is Jellal's Edolas counterpart and therefore shares his appearance despite being a separate person with a completely different history.
