Lyon Vastia

Lyon is ambitious, proud, competitive, and initially consumed by the need to surpass Ul. He chooses her as his teacher specifically because he believes she is the strongest mage he can find, then begins measuring his entire future against the possibility of exceeding her.

His rivalry with Gray becomes intensely personal after Ul's sacrifice. Lyon blames Gray for creating the situation that removed his chance to defeat his teacher and spends years refusing to accept Gray's explanation of what happened.

After resolving the conflict surrounding Deliora, Lyon becomes more mature without losing his competitive streak. He joins Lamia Scale, forms genuine friendships, and develops into one of the guild's strongest mages.

Lyon specializes in Ice-Make, the same Molding Magic taught to Gray. His style is classified as Dynamic Ice-Make because he primarily creates animals capable of independent movement.

His creations include ice eagles, dragons, apes, mice, and other creatures suited to different situations. Dynamic constructs can alter direction after being created, distinguishing his fighting style from Gray's emphasis on static weapons and structures.

Lyon initially casts Ice-Make with one hand. Ul had taught that using both hands gives Molding Magic greater balance and stability, making Lyon's one-handed approach faster but less reliable.

As an experienced Lamia Scale mage, he later develops a much broader arsenal and enough power to be regarded among the guild's leading members.

Lyon's childhood begins with his search for a powerful teacher. Ul accepts him as her pupil, and the two later encounter Gray in the ruins of a town destroyed by Deliora.

Gray eventually pursues Deliora alone, prompting Ul and Lyon to intervene. Ul sacrifices herself through Iced Shell, converting her body into the ice that seals Deliora. She asks Gray to tell Lyon that she died rather than reveal she became the seal, fearing Lyon would waste his life trying to undo it.

Years later, Lyon discovers the truth and begins the Moon Drip ritual on Galuna Island, attempting to melt Iced Shell and revive Deliora so that he can defeat the demon himself and claim to have surpassed Ul.

Fairy Tail's unauthorized mission to the island brings Gray back into Lyon's life. Deliora is eventually released only for its body to collapse immediately because Ul's Iced Shell had already killed it, destroying the premise on which Lyon had built his obsession.

Lyon later joins Lamia Scale and returns as an ally during the battle against Oración Seis and subsequent conflicts.

Ul is Lyon's teacher and guardian. His admiration for her becomes an unhealthy obsession with surpassing her until he eventually accepts what her sacrifice meant.

Gray Fullbuster is Lyon's fellow student and long-term rival. Their resentment gradually softens into a competitive but genuine friendship.

Juvia Lockser becomes the object of Lyon's immediate romantic interest after he meets her, creating a comedic rivalry with Gray that Juvia interprets very differently.

Sherry Blendy, Yuka Suzuki, and Toby Horhorta assist Lyon during the Moon Drip operation and later become associated with Lamia Scale.

Deliora is the demon Lyon attempts to revive and defeat as his substitute for directly surpassing Ul.
