Personality
Personality
Souzou is idealistic, compassionate and deeply committed to the revolutionary promises made to ordinary people. He believes the Sekihōtai's work spreading news of reduced taxes is part of creating a fairer society rather than mere wartime propaganda.
He treats the young Sanosuke with kindness and gives him a sense of purpose. This makes Souzou fundamentally different from the cynical authority figures Sanosuke later encounters.
His willingness to stand behind the promises he has spread ultimately places him at odds with political expediency. Souzou values the credibility of the revolution and the welfare of ordinary citizens above his own security.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Souzou is a revolutionary military commander rather than one of the series' superhuman duelists. He leads the First Unit of the Sekihōtai and possesses the organizational and leadership ability required to direct its activities.
The manga does not establish a named sword style or signature combat technique for him. His influence comes primarily through leadership, ideals and the loyalty he inspires in Sanosuke and his other followers.
Story Role
Story Role
The Sekihōtai travels ahead of the Imperial forces spreading promises that taxes will be reduced after the revolution. Souzou genuinely believes those promises and teaches Sanosuke to believe in the new age they are helping create.
When the emerging government realizes it cannot afford the promised tax reductions, it denounces the Sekihōtai as a false army and makes its members scapegoats for promises the government itself authorized them to spread. Souzou is executed and his severed head publicly displayed.
The young Sanosuke witnesses the aftermath and becomes deeply embittered toward the Meiji government. He adopts Souzou's family name, becoming Sagara Sanosuke, and carries his captain's ideals into adulthood.
The 1996 anime alters details of the event, depicting Souzou as dying from gunshot wounds while protecting Sanosuke.
Relationships
Relationships
Sanosuke Sagara serves under Souzou as a child and idolizes him. After Souzou's execution, Sanosuke takes his captain's surname and preserves his memory as the standard against which he judges the Meiji government.
Kenshin Himura later becomes close to Sanosuke and helps him confront the anger rooted in what happened to the Sekihōtai.
Tsukioka Tsunan is another former Sekihōtai member whose bitterness over the unit's destruction and Souzou's fate survives into the Meiji era.
