Sotsu Tanegashima

Tanegashima is openly obsessed with money and will accept extraordinary risks when a large enough prize is available. His attitude is shared by Yakushima and Kikaijima rather than being simple personal greed; all three have experienced poverty severe enough to shape their understanding of financial security.

For all his claims that money matters more than friendship, Tanegashima ultimately values his friends more. He and Yakushima are especially protective of Kikaijima and treat her much like a daughter, reacting aggressively toward anyone who threatens her.

His dream of swimming through a pool filled with money captures both sides of his personality: he is genuinely materialistic, but his fixation grows from deprivation rather than luxury.

Tanegashima is an exceptional competitive swimmer and is classified as a Special. Together with Yakushima and Kikaijima, he gives Hakoniwa's Swimming Club a level of athletic ability far beyond that of an ordinary school team.

His physical conditioning allows him to compete through demanding aquatic events and tolerate risks that would be unreasonable for ordinary students.

No named Abnormality, Minus or Style is established for Tanegashima. His abilities come from extraordinary athletic specialization rather than a supernatural skill.

Tanegashima becomes involved with the Student Council when the Swimming Club enters the Club Battle Swim Meet. The competition offers a large cash prize, immediately motivating all three principal swimmers.

The Swimming Club's obsession with winning money initially makes its members look mercenary, but their background explains why financial rewards matter so much. Tanegashima's childhood orphanage was foreclosed because it lacked sufficient funds, an experience Kikaijima cites when explaining his attitude.

He continues appearing as part of Hakoniwa's broader student community after the swimming storyline and remains closely associated with his teammates.

Umumichi Yakushima is Tanegashima's Swimming Club captain and shares both his exceptional swimming ability and fixation on money.

Mogana Kikaijima is Tanegashima's younger teammate. Tanegashima and Umumichi Yakushima treat Mogana Kikaijima like a daughter and are fiercely protective of her.

Medaka Kurokami's Student Council competes against Tanegashima's Swimming Club during the Club Battle Swim Meet.

Zenkichi Hitoyoshi is among the Student Council members who face the Swimming Club during the competition.
