Personality
Personality
Sloth is restrained, calculating and emotionally distant. She generally prefers deception, infiltration and manipulation to conspicuous violence, making her government position especially useful to the Homunculi.
She is troubled by memories and emotions that seem to originate outside her own identity. Rather than embracing them, she regards those feelings as something she must overcome in order to establish that she exists independently.
Her bond with Wrath complicates this determination. He treats her as a maternal figure, and she allows an intimacy with him that contrasts with the emotional distance she normally maintains.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Sloth can liquefy her body and manipulate it as water. She can transform partially or completely, extend liquid limbs, engulf opponents and flow through openings inaccessible to ordinary humans.
Her fluid form also makes conventional physical attacks difficult to use against her. Like other Homunculi in the 2003 continuity, she possesses enhanced durability and regeneration supported by the Red Stones within her body.
Her principal weakness is contact with the remains of the person whose attempted resurrection created her. Such material destabilizes her Homunculus body and suppresses her regenerative abilities.
Story Role
Story Role
Sloth spends much of the series operating inside Central under the name Juliet Douglas. Her access to Bradley and military administration allows the Homunculi to influence government activity without openly revealing themselves.
Sloth was created by Edward and Alphonse's failed attempt to resurrect their mother, Trisha Elric. Dante later found the resulting Homunculus, supplied her with Red Stones and helped her develop into a physical duplicate of Trisha.
Sloth eventually decides that killing Edward and Alphonse will prove that she is not their mother and free her from Trisha's lingering emotions. Edward ultimately confronts her using Trisha's remains. After Wrath inadvertently merges those remains into her body, Edward transmutes her liquid form into ethanol and causes it to evaporate, destroying her.
Relationships
Relationships
Edward Elric is one of Sloth's creators and one of Trisha's sons. Sloth seeks to kill him partly because she believes doing so will sever her inherited maternal feelings.
Alphonse Elric shares the same connection to Sloth. He has greater difficulty accepting that her resemblance to Trisha does not make her their resurrected mother.
Trisha Elric is the deceased woman whom Edward and Alphonse attempted to resurrect, resulting in Sloth's creation.
Wrath regards Sloth as a mother and becomes deeply attached to her.
Dante finds Sloth after her creation, supplies her with Red Stones and recruits her into the Homunculi serving her plans.
King Bradley publicly employs Sloth as Juliet Douglas, giving her direct access to the Führer's office.
