Shinsaku Takasugi

Takasugi is confident, perceptive and unconventional. He is willing to challenge established social assumptions when they interfere with Chōshū's ability to fight effectively, an outlook reflected in the mixed social composition of the Kiheitai.

He quickly appreciates ability when he sees it. Kenshin's youth and social position do not prevent Takasugi from recognizing that the boy possesses exceptional martial talent.

His revolutionary commitment is practical rather than romanticized. Takasugi belongs to a movement engaged in a genuine military and political struggle, and his decisions reflect the urgency of strengthening Chōshū against its enemies.

Takasugi's primary importance lies in leadership and military organization rather than the superhuman sword combat emphasized elsewhere in the series. He commands the Kiheitai and operates as an influential Chōshū revolutionary.

His approach to recruitment breaks with conventional feudal military organization by accepting capable men from different social classes. This gives Chōshū access to a wider pool of manpower during a period when military effectiveness is becoming increasingly important.

The series does not establish a named personal sword technique or rank Takasugi directly against fighters such as Kenshin or Saitou.

Takasugi appears during the account of Kenshin's entry into the revolutionary movement. Kenshin presents himself to the Kiheitai because he believes his sword can help create a new era in which ordinary people can live more peacefully.

Kenshin's extraordinary performance attracts the attention of Katsura. Takasugi is involved in the environment in which the young swordsman's ability is evaluated before Katsura takes him to Kyoto for covert work.

Kenshin's transition from an idealistic Kiheitai recruit to Chōshū's feared assassin begins when Katsura removes him from ordinary military service and employs him directly as Hitokiri Battōsai.

Kogoro Katsura is Takasugi's fellow Chōshū revolutionary and one of the movement's principal leaders.

Kenshin Himura enters the revolutionary movement through the Kiheitai before Katsura recognizes his unusual swordsmanship and recruits him for covert assassination work.

Aritomo Yamagata is another Chōshū revolutionary associated with the political and military movement that eventually contributes to the Meiji Restoration.
