Shinobu no Sobo

Shinobu's grandmother is stern, traditional and highly controlling. She expects her granddaughter to acquire useful accomplishments and approaches Shinobu's development according to the standards of the household rather than simply allowing the child to choose freely.

Her control extends beyond childhood lessons. She remains deeply involved in Shinobu's choices and prospects as the younger woman approaches adulthood.

At the same time, her decision to introduce Shinobu to formal karuta has enormous consequences. What begins as another attempt to give her granddaughter a suitable skill becomes the activity around which Shinobu constructs her identity.

Shinobu's grandmother is not established as a competitive karuta player. Her influence on the game comes through recognizing Shinobu's interest and taking her to the Myoujou Society for instruction.

She possesses substantial social authority outside karuta through her political career in Kyoto. That status reinforces her position as the dominant decision-maker within the Wakamiya household.

Shinobu's grandmother becomes important when the series explores the Queen's childhood. Young Shinobu struggles with several conventional activities before displaying a profound attachment to karuta cards.

Her grandmother takes her to the Myoujou Society, where Daijirou Ise recognizes the child's extraordinary potential. That decision begins the formal training that eventually shapes Shinobu's competitive life.

The restrictive environment created around Shinobu later contributes to her struggle for independence. Her grandmother continues filtering practical opportunities and attempting to determine what kind of future is acceptable for her.

Shinobu Wakamiya is her granddaughter. Shinobu's Grandmother introduces Shinobu Wakamiya to organized karuta but also exercises extensive control over her upbringing and later choices.

Shiho Wakamiya is Shinobu's mother and another member of the household dominated by the older matriarch.

Daijirou Ise receives the young Shinobu at the Myoujou Society after her grandmother brings her there to learn karuta.
