Shiho Wakamiya

Shiho is less forceful than the older matriarch of the Wakamiya household. Her comparatively passive position can make her seem distant from the decisions that shape Shinobu's childhood and competitive development.

She nevertheless pays attention to changes in her daughter. Moments in which Shinobu accepts help or expresses ambitions outside the expectations of the household can surprise Shiho precisely because Shinobu has spent so much of her life isolated and self-contained.

Shiho is not established as a competitive karuta player. No class rank, society membership or specialist playing ability is attributed to her.

Her importance lies instead in the family environment surrounding the reigning Queen and in the tension between Shinobu's personal ambitions and the expectations imposed on her at home.

Shiho appears as the series begins exploring Shinobu's home life rather than presenting her solely as the seemingly untouchable Queen encountered at tournaments.

Through the Wakamiya household, the story reveals that Shinobu's isolation is connected not only to elite karuta training but also to a restrictive family environment.

Later, Shiho hears Shinobu attempt to explain her ambition of becoming a professional karuta player, bringing her directly into her daughter's struggle to imagine a livelihood built around the one field in which she feels completely at home.

Shinobu Wakamiya is Shiho's daughter. Shiho witnesses Shinobu Wakamiya's development from an isolated child into an elite competitor attempting to define her own future.

Shinobu's Grandmother is the dominant older figure in the Wakamiya household. Shiho lives within the family structure largely controlled by Shinobu's Grandmother, whose decisions strongly affect her daughter.
