Shinobu Kochou

Shinobu maintains an almost constant smile and speaks with deliberate politeness, even while confronting demons. Beneath that composed exterior is a much sharper temperament. She can be teasing, sarcastic, and deliberately unsettling, particularly when describing the punishments she believes demons should face before she kills them.

Her manner is partly modeled after her late elder sister, Kanae Kochou, whose gentle outlook Shinobu tries to preserve. Shinobu's own feelings toward demons are far less forgiving. She carries intense anger over the losses caused by them, yet usually channels that emotion into preparation and careful planning rather than uncontrolled aggression.

Shinobu is compassionate toward wounded Demon Slayers and takes her medical responsibilities seriously. She is also perceptive about other people, recognizing emotional problems that may not be openly stated and occasionally provoking others intentionally to make them respond.

Shinobu is a Hashira despite lacking the physical strength necessary to cut through a demon's neck. She compensates through extraordinary speed, agility, thrusting power, intelligence, and specialized poison. Her Nichirin sword is modified into a narrow, needle-like blade designed to pierce rather than decapitate, allowing her to inject wisteria-based toxins directly into a demon's body.

Her Insect Breathing style developed around those limitations. Techniques such as Butterfly Dance: Caprice, Dance of the Bee Sting: True Flutter, Dance of the Dragonfly: Compound Eye Hexagon, and Dance of the Centipede: Hundred-Legged Zigzag emphasize rapid movement and repeated precision strikes rather than conventional sword cuts.

Shinobu is also one of the Corps' leading medical and pharmaceutical experts. She develops poisons powerful enough to kill demons, prepares antidotes for other toxins, and studies demon biology in considerable detail. Before the final battles, she collaborates with Tamayo on drugs intended to weaken Muzan Kibutsuji and prepares an extreme wisteria-based contingency specifically for Doma.

Shinobu first becomes directly involved with Tanjiro Kamado during the Mount Natagumo mission. She arrives after the lower-ranked Demon Slayers have been overwhelmed and demonstrates how radically her fighting style differs from conventional swordsmanship. She later helps supervise Tanjiro, Zenitsu Agatsuma, and Inosuke Hashibira during their recovery and rehabilitation at the Butterfly Mansion.

Her position as a Hashira places her in discussions concerning Nezuko Kamado, initially making her one of the senior Demon Slayers suspicious of allowing a demon to travel alongside the Corps. Continued contact with Tanjiro and Nezuko gradually gives her greater reason to cooperate with them.

During the Infinity Castle battle, Shinobu confronts Doma, the Upper Rank responsible for Kanae's death. Knowing that she cannot overcome him through conventional swordsmanship, she executes a plan prepared long in advance: saturating her own body with an enormous quantity of wisteria poison so that Doma will ingest it if he absorbs her. Her sacrifice severely weakens him and enables Kanao and Inosuke to finish the battle.

Kanae Kochou is Shinobu's elder sister and one of the strongest influences on her personality. Kanae's gentleness, hope that humans and demons might coexist, and habitual smile leave a lasting impression on Shinobu. After Kanae is fatally wounded by Doma, Shinobu adopts aspects of her sister's demeanor while privately dedicating herself to avenging her.

Kanao Tsuyuri becomes Shinobu and Kanae's adopted younger sister. Shinobu helps raise and train her at the Butterfly Mansion, although she sometimes struggles with Kanao's habit of suppressing her own wishes. Shinobu ultimately entrusts Kanao with knowledge of her plan against Doma.

Giyu Tomioka is a fellow Hashira whom Shinobu frequently teases about his awkward personality and difficulty communicating with others. Their exchanges often sound antagonistic, but they operate effectively together as senior members of the Corps.

Tanjiro Kamado earns Shinobu's interest through his unusual compassion toward demons and his determination to protect Nezuko. She later helps oversee his rehabilitation and discusses her genuine anger toward demons with him.

Nezuko Kamado initially represents a contradiction to Shinobu's experience with demons. Her refusal to consume humans eventually gives Shinobu evidence that Tanjiro's claims about her are not simply wishful thinking.

Mitsuri Kanroji is another Hashira with whom Shinobu shares a friendly relationship. The two women get along well, and Mitsuri occasionally teaches her Western-style cooking.

Doma is the demon Shinobu hates most personally. He killed Kanae, and Shinobu spends years planning a method of defeating him despite knowing that the difference in their direct combat strength is enormous.
