Seto Kaiba

Kaiba is proud, abrasive, ambitious, and intensely competitive. He hates losing and treats victory as proof of personal strength, particularly when facing Yami Yuugi. His confidence frequently crosses into arrogance, and he openly dismisses duelists whom he considers beneath him.

His obsession with self-reliance comes from a childhood in which weakness carried severe consequences. After being adopted by Gozaburo Kaiba, Seto is subjected to a relentless education intended to mold him into an heir. He eventually uses what he learns to seize control of KaibaCorp and redirects the weapons company toward entertainment and gaming technology.

Kaiba's harshness softens most visibly around his younger brother. His devotion to Mokuba Kaiba is unconditional, and threats against Mokuba can override his usual concern for competition or pride. Despite repeatedly dismissing friendship as sentimental, Kaiba's actions show that he is capable of loyalty and cooperation when circumstances demand it.

Kaiba is one of the world's strongest Duel Monsters players. His decks emphasize overwhelming attack power, rapid summoning, disruption, and combinations centered on Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon and Obelisk the Tormentor become other major weapons during his competitive career.

Outside dueling, Kaiba is an exceptional programmer, engineer, businessman, and strategist. He develops or oversees holographic Duel Monsters systems, portable Duel Disks, virtual-reality environments, and the infrastructure required for Battle City. His technological resources frequently allow him to analyze cards, track participants, and construct enormous entertainment projects.

Kaiba is also physically capable and possesses remarkable determination. He survives dangerous situations, escapes restraints, pilots aircraft, and refuses to submit even when confronted with genuine supernatural phenomena. His insistence that magic can be explained or overcome through technology remains a defining part of his worldview.

Kaiba first encounters Yuugi through his interest in the rare Blue-Eyes White Dragon owned by Sugoroku Mutou. His determination to acquire every available copy leads to his first major defeat against Yami Yuugi and establishes their rivalry.

At Duelist Kingdom, Kaiba travels to Pegasus's island while trying to recover control of KaibaCorp and rescue Mokuba. His rivalry with Yuugi continues, but their goals periodically force them into cooperation against common enemies.

Kaiba later organizes Battle City after learning about the Egyptian God Cards. He acquires Obelisk the Tormentor from Ishizu Ishtar, creates new tournament rules around ante cards and introduces his Duel Disk system throughout Domino City. His stated goal is to defeat Yuugi and claim the title of greatest duelist.

Kaiba eventually loses to Yami Yuugi in the Battle City semifinals, but his rivalry persists throughout subsequent conflicts. During the Pharaoh's final journey into his memories, the ancient Priest Seto is revealed as Kaiba's historical counterpart, although modern Kaiba himself continues to reject supernatural interpretations of his connection to the past.

Yuugi Mutou and Yami Yuugi are Kaiba's defining rivals. Kaiba directs enormous resources toward earning a decisive victory over Yami Yuugi, whom he regards as the only duelist consistently capable of challenging his supremacy.

Mokuba Kaiba is Kaiba's younger brother and the person he protects above everyone else. Kaiba's affection for Mokuba Kaiba survives their difficult childhood and his increasingly severe public persona.

Gozaburo Kaiba is Kaiba's adoptive father. Gozaburo Kaiba's brutal upbringing shapes Seto's obsession with power and independence, while Seto ultimately rejects his adoptive father's weapons business and repurposes KaibaCorp.

Katsuya Jonouchi is a frequent target of Kaiba's contempt. Kaiba dismisses Katsuya Jonouchi as an inferior duelist, although Jonouchi's accomplishments repeatedly challenge that assessment.

Maximillion Pegasus attempts to take control of KaibaCorp and uses Mokuba Kaiba as leverage against Seto, making their conflict both corporate and personal.
