Salim Hapshass

Salim is haughty, entitled, and openly conscious of the distinction between nobles and commoners. When the entrance exam reaches its one-on-one battles, he deliberately chooses Yuno because he expects defeating a peasant to demonstrate the natural superiority of a noble mage.

His arrogance is accompanied by a willingness to rely on his family's influence. Anime-original material expands this side of him considerably, depicting Salim as capable of presenting a courteous public face while arranging dishonest schemes behind the scenes.

That additional storyline also shows that he is not entirely incompetent. Salim can lie convincingly and organize a plan involving hired mages, although his vanity and resentment make his motives relatively easy to expose.

Salim uses Lightning Magic, allowing him to generate and manipulate electricity. His grimoire contains offensive lightning spells suited to direct combat.

His principal demonstrated technique is Holy Lightning Boots, which covers his legs in lightning and increases his mobility. He uses the spell during his entrance-exam duel with Yuno, intending to exploit its speed to overwhelm his opponent.

Salim possesses enough magical ability to participate seriously in the Magic Knights Entrance Exam, but the gulf between him and Yuno is enormous. Yuno's Wind Magic disperses Salim's attack and ends their duel almost immediately.

Salim appears during the Magic Knights Entrance Exam and selects Yuno for the combat portion. He taunts the orphan over his low social standing before attacking with Lightning Magic, only for Yuno to defeat him with a single overwhelming wind spell.

The fight helps establish that magical talent in the Clover Kingdom does not follow its rigid class hierarchy as neatly as nobles assume. Salim has social privilege and magical training, yet the peasant he dismisses is vastly stronger.

The anime gives Salim a larger role after the exam. He approaches Klaus Lunettes and Mimosa Vermillion while they are escorting Yuno on his first mission and claims that his family's region is suffering from a series of attacks. The Golden Dawn members escort him home while investigating.

The attacks are ultimately revealed as part of a scheme Salim arranged himself. His intention is to discredit and take revenge on Yuno for humiliating him at the entrance exam. The plot is exposed, and Salim's father has him arrested for his actions. This storyline is anime-original rather than part of the manga continuity.

Yuno is Salim's entrance-exam opponent and the focus of his resentment. Salim initially views him as an inferior peasant, but Yuno defeats him almost instantly. In the anime-original escort mission, Salim later arranges an elaborate scheme intended to take revenge on him.

Klaus Lunettes accompanies Yuno during the anime-original investigation surrounding Salim and becomes suspicious of the circumstances behind the attacks.

Mimosa Vermillion also accompanies the group during Salim's anime-original storyline and helps investigate the supposed danger facing his family's territory.
