Roubaul

Roubaul is gentle, patient, eccentric, and deeply protective of Wendy. He provides her with the sense of belonging she desperately needs and treats Carla as equally welcome within Cait Shelter.

He also carries tremendous guilt connected to Nirvana. That guilt has made him willing to wait for an extraordinary length of time for someone capable of correcting what he considers his greatest mistake.

His occasional comic habits—such as pouring himself a drink and then drinking directly from the bottle instead—contrast with the solemnity underlying most of his decisions.

Roubaul possesses extraordinarily powerful Illusion Magic. His illusions can have convincing appearances, personalities, emotional responses, and apparent physical presence.

He also understands Sealing Magic well enough to restrict Nirvana's power for centuries.

Nirvana itself is a massive magical system capable of reversing the alignment of people caught between strong light and darkness. Although Roubaul understands its mechanisms, he regards the magic as a catastrophic failure rather than a weapon he wishes to use.

Roubaul sends Wendy and Carla to represent Cait Shelter in the Allied Forces assembled against Oración Seis.

As Nirvana approaches Cait Shelter, he refuses to evacuate, insisting that the guild must continue believing in the allies fighting to destroy it.

Roubaul is eventually revealed to be a member of the ancient Nirvit tribe and the creator of Nirvana approximately four hundred years earlier. Nirvana was intended to end warfare by converting darkness into light, but the darkness it absorbed eventually corrupted the Nirvit and drove them to destroy one another.

Roubaul later died but remained as a spirit watching over the sealed Nirvana. Cait Shelter itself—including every guild member except Wendy and Carla—is an enormous illusion he created because Wendy wanted somewhere to belong. Once Nirvana is destroyed, Roubaul releases the illusion and disappears after telling Wendy that she now has real friends.

Wendy Marvell is the child Roubaul takes into his care and the person for whom he creates Cait Shelter.

Carla lives with Wendy under Roubaul's protection and joins her in representing Cait Shelter.

Jellal Fernandes is connected to Roubaul through Wendy's childhood: a young Jellal, actually Mystogan, brings Wendy to Roubaul and asks him to care for her.

Brain targets Cait Shelter because he believes its people retain knowledge capable of resealing Nirvana.

Jura Neekis, Lucy Heartfilia, Natsu Dragneel, and the other Allied Forces eventually become the genuine friends Roubaul believes Wendy no longer needs an artificial guild to replace.
