Personality
Personality
As a child, Rollo is frightened but perceptive about the circumstances surrounding him. He questions the village's practice of sacrificing children and openly tells Vash that he does not believe God will save him from his illness.
His fear does not prevent him from trusting Vash when the wandering gunman promises to help. That promise becomes especially meaningful because Rollo sees little hope elsewhere.
Years of experimentation severely damage Rollo's original personality. As Monev, he is driven toward Vash with overwhelming aggression, although fragments of his childhood memories remain accessible.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Rollo begins as an ordinary human child weakened by illness. After being taken by the Eye of Michael, he is subjected to William Conrad's experiments and transformed into Monev the Gale.
As Monev, Rollo possesses enormous strength, durability and regenerative ability. His body is heavily augmented, and he carries large rotary firearms capable of producing sustained barrages. An injected serum allows him to recover rapidly from severe injuries.
These modifications make him physically powerful enough to overpower ordinary humans and withstand attacks that would normally be fatal.
Story Role
Story Role
Rollo first meets Vash after fleeing his village upon learning that he has been chosen as its next sacrifice. He explains that he is sick and expects to die young. Vash returns him to his mother and promises to find medicine.
When Vash returns with medicine, Rollo has already been surrendered to the Eye of Michael. William Conrad experiments on him for years, transforming him into the enhanced fighter known as Monev the Gale.
Vash encounters the adult Rollo without initially recognizing him. After discovering who Monev really is, Vash tries to reach the boy he once knew, but Wolfwood shoots Rollo in the head, killing him. The incident creates a bitter argument between Vash and Wolfwood over whether killing him was mercy or an abandonment of hope.
Relationships
Relationships
Vash the Stampede befriends Rollo as a child and promises to find medicine for him. Vash later recognizes Monev as Rollo and desperately attempts to reach him rather than kill him.
Rollo's Mother raises Rollo in the windmill village. Under pressure from the village's beliefs, she allows him to be offered as a sacrifice, after which he is taken by the Eye of Michael.
William Conrad becomes responsible for Rollo's experimentation. Conrad's procedures transform him into Monev the Gale.
Nicholas D. Wolfwood confronts Rollo alongside Vash. Wolfwood kills Rollo, arguing afterward that ending his suffering was an act of mercy.
