Nicholas D. Wolfwood

Wolfwood is pragmatic, sarcastic and compassionate beneath a hardened exterior. He enjoys teasing Vash and can appear cynical, but his decisions repeatedly reveal concern for children and people unable to defend themselves.

His greatest disagreement with Vash concerns killing. Wolfwood considers lethal force an ugly but sometimes necessary means of protecting innocent lives, while Vash refuses to accept that anyone must die.

Wolfwood's humor and easy social manner coexist with substantial guilt. His life has forced him into roles that conflict with the person he would prefer to be, and much of his journey concerns whether he can still choose differently.

Wolfwood is an exceptional gunfighter capable of wielding the Punisher despite its enormous size. The cross-shaped weapon combines heavy firearms and gives him enough firepower to confront opponents who would overwhelm ordinary gunmen.

In the manga and Stampede continuities, Wolfwood's physical abilities have been artificially enhanced. He possesses heightened speed, strength and resilience, while special drugs can accelerate recovery from severe injuries.

His combat instincts differ sharply from Vash's. Wolfwood fights efficiently and is willing to aim for lethal results rather than engineering the elaborate nonfatal solutions Vash prefers.

Wolfwood enters Vash's travels as an apparent wandering clergyman and quickly establishes himself as someone capable of keeping pace with the Humanoid Typhoon. Their friendship grows through repeated arguments about violence, responsibility and whether ideals remain meaningful when protecting them costs lives.

The manga, 1998 anime and Stampede significantly alter details of Wolfwood's history. In the manga and Stampede, his connections to the Eye of Michael, experimental enhancement and other assassins receive much greater emphasis.

Wolfwood is tied to the organization serving Knives and initially approaches Vash under obligations that he does not openly disclose. His loyalties increasingly shift toward protecting Vash and the people he cares about.

Vash the Stampede is Wolfwood's closest traveling companion and ideological opposite. Their arguments over lethal force develop into genuine mutual respect and friendship.

Milly Thompson becomes Wolfwood's friend in the original continuity. The 1998 anime adds stronger romantic implications to their relationship than the manga.

Meryl Stryfe travels alongside Wolfwood and Vash and regularly encounters the consequences of their differing approaches to violence.

Livio the Double Fang shares Wolfwood's orphanage background in the manga and Stampede. Their connection becomes central to Wolfwood's later story.

Millions Knives stands behind the organization that uses Wolfwood. Wolfwood's eventual rejection of that role places his own choices ahead of the orders imposed upon him.
