Riki Takatou

Takatou is confident, analytical and demanding. Years of dominance have given him enormous faith in Kainan's preparation, and he expects his players to behave like representatives of the prefecture's premier program.

He is usually composed when Kainan controls a game but becomes visibly more animated when an opponent threatens that control. His emotional reactions reveal how seriously he takes maintaining the program's winning standard.

Takatou also enjoys the strategic contest between coaches. He watches individual behavior carefully, looking not merely for technical weaknesses but for personality traits that can be exploited.

Takatou is an accomplished tactician and talent developer. Kainan's seventeen-year run as Kanagawa champion demonstrates the consistency of the program operating under his methods.

His training is exceptionally demanding. Many new players quit quickly, and only a small proportion survive long enough to become established members. Soichiro Jin's development from an unsuitable center prospect into an elite shooter exemplifies the persistence cultivated within that environment.

Takatou is particularly adept at reading inexperienced players. Against Shohoku, he identifies Sakuragi's tendency to judge opponents by appearance and turns that psychological weakness into a tactical opportunity.

Takatou serves as the opposing coach during one of Shohoku's most important Kanagawa games. Kainan enters not merely as another strong school but as the institution that has dominated the prefecture for nearly two decades.

When Sakuragi's rebounding begins affecting the game, Takatou responds by introducing Yoshinori Miyamasu. The slight reserve appears harmless enough that Sakuragi fails to respect his shooting.

Kainan survives Shohoku's challenge and remains undefeated in the prefectural final league, extending its championship streak and qualifying for the Inter-High as Kanagawa's first representative.

At the national tournament, Takatou guides Kainan all the way to the championship game, where the team finishes as national runner-up.

Moichi Taoka is Takatou's longtime friend and rival. They have known each other since their playing days and continue their competition as coaches of Kainan and Ryonan.

Shinichi Maki is Takatou's captain and the central player around whom Kainan's formidable team operates.

Soichiro Jin develops within Takatou's program from an unsuitable center candidate into one of the country's most dangerous perimeter shooters.

Yoshinori Miyamasu is a reserve whose shooting and unassuming appearance Takatou cleverly uses against Shohoku.

Hanamichi Sakuragi becomes a tactical problem for Takatou because of his rebounding, but his inexperience also gives the Kainan coach a weakness to exploit.
