Rice

Rice is enthusiastic, friendly and affectionate. He behaves primarily like an ordinary dog despite repeatedly being transported into violent alien hunts.

He is attentive enough to react to the people and events around him, but he shows little understanding of Gantz's scoring system or mission objectives. His tendency to wag his tail and seek attention contrasts sharply with the fear and hostility of the human participants.

Rice possesses the ordinary physical abilities of a dog and no supernatural powers.

He can wear a specially fitted Gantz suit, which provides protection comparable in principle to the equipment worn by human participants. Kei Kishimoto helps him into the suit during one of the early missions.

Rice never earns mission points. His repeated survival comes less from defeating targets than from remaining out of the most dangerous confrontations.

Rice is already familiar to Nishi when Kurono and Katou enter the game, implying that he has survived multiple hunts before the series begins.

He accompanies the Tokyo team through the Onion Alien and Tanaka Alien missions, returning safely despite making virtually no contribution to the score. His continued presence makes him an odd constant among groups of human participants who change rapidly from mission to mission.

During the Buddhist Temple mission, Rice finally confronts one of the major temple enemies and is killed when the giant statue crushes him.

Joichiro Nishi knows Rice from missions preceding the beginning of the series and remarks on the dog's unusual ability to keep surviving.

Kei Kishimoto treats Rice kindly and helps him wear his Gantz suit.

Kei Kurono and Masaru Katou repeatedly encounter Rice during their earliest missions.
