Oscar Joaquin de la Rosa

Oscar is gentle, patient and physically courageous. He refuses to retaliate even when attacked, believing that strength should be used to protect rather than intimidate others.

His lessons are practical rather than punitive. Instead of abandoning Chad as a violent child, he accepts harm on his behalf and trusts that the example will teach him what lectures could not.

Oscar has no supernatural powers. He is a strong, muscular man who withstands a beating from several adults without striking back.

His defining strength is moral restraint. By protecting Chad while refusing revenge, he demonstrates the principle that later governs Chad’s enormous physical and spiritual power.

After Chad’s parents die, Oscar takes the boy to Mexico and raises him. Chad initially exploits his size to bully other children, ignoring repeated attempts to correct his behavior.

When the fathers of Chad’s victims attack him, Oscar steps between them and silently accepts the punishment. The incident transforms Chad’s outlook. Oscar later gives him a Mexican coin, and the two promise to use their powerful fists only in defense of one another.

Yasutora Sado is Oscar’s grandson and adopted child. Oscar’s example becomes the foundation of Chad’s pacifism, loyalty and protective use of force.

Ichigo Kurosaki never develops a direct relationship with Oscar, but Chad extends his promise to protect toward Ichigo, treating his friend’s life as he would his grandfather’s keepsake.
