Narunosuke

Narunosuke is shy, courteous and painfully aware of his own fear. He describes both himself and his late master as cowards, explaining that he joined other Tōjū because safety in numbers seemed preferable to facing the Shinigami alone.

Unlike fully corrupted Tōjū, he remains grateful for compassion and does not initially want to hurt anyone. His friendship with Haineko briefly restores his consciousness even after instinct overwhelms him.

Narunosuke claims to have been a weak Zanpakutō, but his transformation into a complete Tōjū releases substantial spiritual pressure. The outburst is powerful enough to destroy the cabin around him and overwhelm lieutenant-level opponents.

His transformed body develops long black tentacles capable of striking with great force. No original Zanpakutō name, Shikai or ability from his former partnership is revealed.

After his master’s death, Narunosuke travels with other Tōjū for protection but flees when Shinigami attack them. Haineko finds him wounded and secretly shelters him instead of carrying out her orders.

Narunosuke’s condition inevitably worsens until he becomes a mindless Tōjū and attacks both Haineko and Rangiku. Haineko surrounds them with her ash and appeals to him directly. He regains himself long enough to embrace and thank her before reverting to a sword and shattering.

Haineko shelters Narunosuke and develops affection for him. Her compassion provides his last connection to his former identity.

Rangiku Matsumoto recognizes the danger of Narunosuke’s deterioration but also protects Haineko when he transforms. Narunosuke’s unnamed former Shinigami master dies before the episode and is remembered by him as equally fearful.
