Personality
Personality
Naomi is intelligent, idealistic and deeply invested in the social purpose of her work. Having experienced discrimination while growing up in the United States, she wants technology to help create a world in which people are not judged or separated because of racial differences.
She can become absorbed in her research and is proud of the All-Age Recognition system she created. Despite her technical confidence, she is emotionally affected by memories of childhood and by the people who showed her kindness during difficult periods.
Her childhood connection with Shiho Miyano is particularly important to her. Naomi remembers Shiho as someone who defended her from bullies and keeps a memento connected to their friendship.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Naomi is a highly talented computer engineer specializing in facial-recognition technology. She created All-Age Recognition, a system that goes beyond conventional facial matching by reconstructing how facial structures change with age.
The system can compare photographs of the same person taken years apart and determine that they represent one individual. This makes Naomi's technology particularly valuable to international law enforcement searching for suspects whose current appearance differs substantially from old records.
She also works comfortably within Pacific Buoy's multinational engineering environment and understands the facility's interconnected surveillance infrastructure.
Story Role
Story Role
Naomi is one of the engineers assembled at Pacific Buoy under Yousuke Makino. Her All-Age Recognition technology is being incorporated into the facility's international surveillance system when the Black Organization becomes interested in its capabilities.
The organization infiltrates Pacific Buoy and targets Naomi because of the system she developed. Conan Edogawa becomes involved after following police officials to the facility and discovering the scale of the threat.
Naomi is kidnapped together with Ai Haibara after the All-Age Recognition system produces results connecting Haibara's appearance to Shiho Miyano. Naomi eventually realizes that the child beside her is the same Shiho who befriended her in America.
Kir covertly helps Naomi and Haibara escape from the Black Organization's submarine. After the immediate crisis, Naomi alters the system so that its apparent results undermine confidence in All-Age Recognition, helping protect Haibara's identity from further scrutiny.
Relationships
Relationships
Mario Argento is Naomi's Italian father and a member of the European Parliament. Her mother is Japanese, giving Naomi a mixed Japanese-Italian family background.
Shiho Miyano attended elementary school with Naomi in the United States. Shiho Miyano defended Naomi when she was bullied, leaving Naomi with a lasting attachment to her childhood friend.
Ai Haibara becomes caught in the Black Organization's operation alongside Naomi. [Naomi eventually recognizes that Ai Haibara is actually the childhood friend she knew as Shiho Miyano.](#spoiler)
Yousuke Makino heads Pacific Buoy and supervises the international team of engineers to which Naomi belongs.
Conan Edogawa becomes one of the principal people trying to rescue Naomi after the Black Organization targets Pacific Buoy.
