Mugear

Mugear is greedy, calculating and willing to sacrifice other people for economic gain. He presents his work as an attempt to restore Xenotime's prosperity, but his decisions consistently prioritize wealth and control over the lives of the people living there.

He is also more perceptive than Russell Tringham initially assumes. Mugear recognizes that Russell and Fletcher Tringham are impersonating the Elric brothers and merely allows the deception to continue because their alchemical work remains useful.

His willingness to exploit both adults and children distinguishes him from researchers who become horrified by the human cost of Red Stone production.

Mugear possesses Red Stones, incomplete alchemical amplifiers that imitate some properties of the Philosopher's Stone. He uses their power as part of Xenotime's artificial gold production.

His more significant power is economic. Mugear owns much of the land around Xenotime and controls the resources required for the experiments, allowing him to direct alchemists and workers without personally possessing exceptional combat ability.

The production process involves Red Water, a highly toxic substance capable of causing severe illness and reproductive harm throughout the local population.

Mugear originally employs Nash Tringham to develop Red Stones from Red Water after Xenotime's natural gold deposits begin failing. The artificial Stones can amplify alchemy enough to transmute ordinary material into gold and seemingly revive the city's fortunes.

Nash eventually rejects the project after learning that Mugear intends to expose pregnant women to Red Water so unborn children will serve as catalysts for crystallizing the substance. Mugear kills Nash and continues searching for alchemists willing to complete the research.

Years later, Russell and Fletcher arrive pretending to be Edward and Alphonse Elric. Mugear already knows their real identities but allows them to continue their father's research. The genuine Elric brothers eventually expose the operation. Mugear flees into the underground Red Water facility, where pressure from the reservoir causes a collapse that crushes him.

Nash Tringham is the alchemist Mugear originally employs to develop Red Stones. Their partnership ends when Nash refuses to continue sacrificing human lives to the research, prompting Mugear to murder him.

Russell Tringham continues his father's research while pretending to be Edward Elric. Mugear knowingly tolerates the impersonation because Russell's abilities remain useful.

Fletcher Tringham works alongside Russell and becomes increasingly troubled by the damage Red Water is causing Xenotime.

Lust cooperates with Mugear because the Red Stone research fits the Homunculi's broader search for a true Philosopher's Stone.

Edward Elric arrives in Xenotime and discovers that someone has stolen his identity while working for Mugear.

Alphonse Elric assists Edward in investigating Mugear's operation and the consequences of Red Water contamination.
