Personality
Personality
Iori is composed, formal and intensely loyal to Momiji Ooka. He addresses her respectfully and treats even her elaborate romantic schemes as responsibilities deserving careful planning.
He is analytical and rarely flustered. When questioned during the Café Poirot case, he improvises credible explanations without hesitation and carefully avoids revealing more about himself than necessary. He also evaluates Heiji Hattori on Momiji's behalf and concludes that the young detective is an appropriate prospective partner for her.
His exceptional self-control is partly explained by his former profession. Before becoming Momiji's butler, Iori served with the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Public Security Bureau, where deception, surveillance and maintaining cover were part of his work.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Iori is remarkably stealthy. Conan Edogawa and Heiji Hattori fail to notice his presence at Café Poirot until he speaks, and he later leaves without drawing the attention of the police.
He is also intelligent and observant, with enough investigative knowledge to follow complex deductions. Momiji routinely uses him as an intermediary, communicating observations and deductions through him.
Iori possesses substantial martial-arts ability and can incapacitate an attacker quickly. His broader skill set reflects his background as a former Public Security Bureau officer, including undercover work under the alias Sakakibara.
Story Role
Story Role
Iori initially appears at Café Poirot using the name Shinichi Wada, a reference to the Japanese rendering of Dr. Watson's name. He becomes one of the people questioned after an attempted murder and relays information from Momiji while Conan Edogawa, Heiji Hattori and Toru Amuro investigate.
After the case, his identity as Momiji's butler is revealed, and he becomes her regular intermediary whenever her pursuit of Heiji intersects with Conan's investigations.
Later cases reveal that Iori formerly served in Public Security. During an undercover operation three years earlier, he operated under the name Sakakibara and met Momiji under dangerous circumstances. He subsequently left that career and became her butler.
Relationships
Relationships
Momiji Ooka is Iori's employer and the person to whom he devotes most of his attention. He manages Momiji Ooka's arrangements, offers advice and supports her pursuit of Heiji Hattori.
Heiji Hattori is the boy Momiji Ooka considers her future husband. Iori evaluates Heiji Hattori personally and approves of him as a prospective partner for his young mistress.
Kazuha Toyama is Momiji Ooka's romantic rival for Heiji Hattori. Iori assists his employer's plans but generally maintains his characteristic formal demeanor toward Kazuha Toyama.
Conan Edogawa encounters Iori during several investigations and quickly recognizes that the butler possesses unusual observational and stealth skills.
Toru Amuro encounters Iori during the Café Poirot case. Iori's former Public Security background gives the two men a professional connection beyond what is initially apparent.
