Mayu

Mayu is grieving but remarkably composed when Masayoshi encounters her. She remains devoted to her family, maintaining their graves even though staying alone in the forest exposes her to further danger.

She quickly becomes attached to the person who rescues her. Her request to travel with Masayoshi reflects gratitude, loneliness, and a desire to leave the site of her family’s deaths. Although she cannot fight, she shows concern for him when his condition deteriorates.

Mayu has no demonstrated supernatural or combat abilities. She is an ordinary Soul and depends on trained Shinigami for protection from Hollows.

Her survival comes through alertness and the intervention of others rather than hidden spiritual powers. She carries no weapon and displays no knowledge of Kidō.

Mayu’s family is killed by a Hollow in the forest, leaving her to bury and mourn them alone. Masayoshi destroys another Hollow threatening her, and she asks to accompany him on his journey.

Yachiru Kusajishi initially tries to keep Mayu away when she realizes that something is wrong with Masayoshi. Mayu is subsequently endangered during the confrontation with the Hollows.

Masayoshi resists his possession long enough to save Mayu, sacrificing his life in the process. Mayu survives the encounter and witnesses his final reconciliation with Yachiru.

Masayoshi is Mayu’s rescuer and protector. She places immediate trust in him and remains concerned for him even after learning that he carries a dangerous Hollow presence.

Yachiru Kusajishi tries to protect Mayu while confronting the truth about her old friend.

Mayu’s unnamed family members were killed shortly before her introduction. Her care for their graves is the clearest evidence of her attachment to them.
