Masaki Izawa

Masaki is calm, observant and difficult to intimidate. He rarely needs to advertise his strength because his reputation already controls many confrontations before they become fights.

He takes fighting seriously without treating every challenge as an excuse for violence. His experience lets him recognize when inexperienced fighters are placing themselves in unnecessary danger, and he frequently explains the difference between techniques that work in a gym and those that remain practical on asphalt.

Much of his interest in Yuu comes from recognition. Masaki's past reveals that he also experienced severe psychological distress and once attempted suicide, giving him a personal understanding of the emptiness and search for belonging that drive Yuu into the streets.

Masaki combines high-level boxing with karate. His boxing background includes Inter-High competition, while his earlier karate training gives him a wider striking arsenal than a conventional boxer.

Rather than simply switching between two sports, he modifies their techniques for street fighting. He accounts for restricted space, hard pavement, clothing, improvised weapons and the absence of sporting rules.

Masaki's experience is another major advantage. He reads an opponent's discipline from stance and movement, identifies its limitations in a street environment and adjusts his tactics accordingly. His composure also prevents the panic that can undermine technically skilled fighters outside controlled competition.

Masaki first encounters Yuu after the unknown "Thug Hunter" begins attracting attention around Shimokitazawa. He recognizes that the inexperienced-looking teenager possesses an unusual combination of practiced punching mechanics and instinctive fighting ability.

Rather than formally taking Yuu as a student, Masaki becomes a guide. He explains techniques, evaluates opponents and repeatedly warns Yuu about the consequences of becoming increasingly immersed in violence.

Masaki also has conflicts of his own, particularly with figures who resent the authority his reputation gives him. His path eventually leads him away from street fighting and into professional kickboxing, allowing him to move beyond the environment in which he had remained emotionally stuck.

Yuu Kamishiro becomes Masaki's protégé and one of the few younger fighters in whom he takes a sustained personal interest. Masaki eventually recognizes Yuu Kamishiro as someone capable of standing where Masaki once stood in the street community.

Mai Izawa is Masaki's younger sister. He is protective of Mai Izawa and becomes especially attentive when she grows close to Yuu.

Shougo Midorikawa is another skilled fighter within Masaki's circle. Masaki respects Shougo Midorikawa's karate ability and understanding of combat.

Yoshii resents Masaki's influence in the streets and repeatedly attempts to undermine or defeat him.

Taka is recruited to fight Masaki as part of Yoshii's campaign against him.
