Maki Ichinose

Maki is rigidly loyal, idealistic and preoccupied with honor. He reveres the previous Eleventh Division captain and refuses to accept Zaraki, interpreting the lawful succession duel as murder rather than division custom.

Gratitude toward Kariya replaces his former military loyalty. Maki initially sees him as a leader capable of creating peace, but that devotion fractures when Kariya’s revenge consumes allies and principles alike.

Nijigasumi releases with the command “Shine brightly.” It manipulates light to produce blinding flashes, obscure Maki’s presence, create deceptive images and launch cutting blades of illumination.

Saigyoku Nijigasumi surrounds an area with a vast dome of concentrated light. Maki combines these effects with competent swordsmanship and movement learned in the Eleventh Division. He never demonstrates Bankai.

After leaving Soul Society, Maki nearly dies during a Hollow attack until Kariya intervenes. He becomes the Bounts’ Soul Reaper ally, kills the traitorous Ryou Utagawa and helps Kariya enter Seireitei.

Maki abandons an assigned mission to challenge Zaraki and is defeated but survives. Badly wounded, he later confronts Kariya after recognizing that revenge has replaced the promised cause. Maki turns Nijigasumi against him, and Kariya kills him before the final battle with Ichigo.

Jin Kariya saves Maki and becomes the leader to whom he pledges his life. Maki ultimately rejects him after witnessing the consequences of his nihilism.

Kenpachi Kiganjou is Maki’s former captain and the object of his continuing loyalty. Kenpachi Zaraki kills Kiganjou in the succession duel, prompting Maki’s desertion and later challenge.

Ryou Utagawa is the Bount traitor Maki executes. Kaname Tousen speaks with Maki about justice in a flashback but is not his captain or formal mentor.
