Maho Hiyajou

Maho is intelligent, blunt and intensely dedicated to research. She becomes irritated when people mistake her for a child and has little patience for being judged by her appearance.

Her confidence as a scientist coexists with a persistent inferiority complex regarding Kurisu. Maho admired her younger colleague and cared deeply about her, yet Kurisu's extraordinary achievements made Maho painfully conscious of the difference she perceived between their abilities.

She is also cautious about Amadeus. Maho understands better than most people that a digital reconstruction built from memories can resemble a person without simply being that person, and she worries about the emotional consequences of forgetting that distinction.

Maho is an accomplished neuroscientist specializing in brain science and artificial intelligence. Working with Leskinen and Kurisu's research, she helps develop Amadeus, which reconstructs personality and cognition from recorded memories.

She is also capable with computers and technical analysis, although her principal expertise lies in neuroscience rather than Daru's style of hacking.

Maho has no supernatural abilities. Her value comes from her scientific knowledge, her understanding of Kurisu's work and her ability to recognize the implications of technologies involving human memory.

Maho enters Steins;Gate 0 after coming to Japan with Leskinen. She demonstrates Amadeus to Okabe, placing him in direct contact with a digital reconstruction created from Kurisu's memories.

Her presence gradually draws her into the Future Gadget Laboratory and the struggle surrounding Kurisu's research. She becomes increasingly suspicious as different groups seek access to Amadeus and time-travel technology.

Maho eventually becomes Lab Member 009 and one of Okabe and Daru's most important scientific collaborators. Across the Beta-world-line struggle, her knowledge helps preserve and advance the research needed for the future effort to overcome convergence.

Kurisu Makise was Maho's junior colleague and close friend at Viktor Chondria University. Maho admired Kurisu while privately struggling with feelings of scientific inferiority beside her.

Rintarou Okabe meets Maho through the Amadeus project. She gradually realizes how deeply his experiences involving Kurisu have affected him and becomes one of his important allies.

Alexis Leskinen is Maho's professor and research superior at Viktor Chondria University. His hidden objectives surrounding Amadeus and time-travel research eventually place him against Maho and the laboratory.

Itaru Hashida becomes one of Maho's technical collaborators as their work turns toward the problems surrounding time travel.

Amadeus Kurisu is the artificial intelligence constructed from Kurisu's recorded memories. Maho helped develop the system and is acutely aware of the distinction between Amadeus and the human Kurisu she knew.
