Lord Gennon

Gennon is vain, possessive and driven by sexual obsession. His immense wealth and political influence have allowed him to indulge himself without meaningful restraint, and his court is populated by young male pages selected for his pleasure.

His fixation on Griffith is particularly intense. Gennon interprets their earlier sexual encounter as something personally significant despite Griffith having treated it purely as a transaction to secure funds for the Hawks. Years later, the possibility of possessing Griffith again overrides Gennon's military judgment.

He is also arrogant about his social position. Gennon expects wealth and rank to give him control over other people, making Griffith's emotional indifference toward their past encounter especially incomprehensible to him.

Gennon has no supernatural abilities and is not portrayed as a notable individual fighter. His power comes from wealth, noble status and military authority.

As governor of Doldrey, he has access to one of Chuder's most important strongholds and to substantial military forces. The fortress is defended by the Purple Rhino Knights under General Boscogn, whose genuine military competence compensates for Gennon's poor battlefield judgment.

Gennon's authority therefore makes him dangerous on a strategic level even though he lacks the personal combat ability of the warriors around him.

Gennon's history with Griffith predates the Hawks' rise to prominence. When the fledgling mercenary company desperately needed money for equipment and soldiers, Griffith sold himself to Gennon. He later explains to Casca that accepting the arrangement was preferable to needlessly sacrificing more of his soldiers to obtain resources through battle.

Years later, Midland launches an assault on the supposedly impregnable Doldrey fortress. Gennon learns that Griffith is commanding the attacking Band of the Hawk and becomes personally invested in capturing him.

Gennon's fixation undermines Chuder's defense. He interferes with Boscogn's military decisions because he wants Griffith taken alive, helping create opportunities the Hawks exploit. After the fortress falls, Griffith confronts Gennon and makes clear that their previous encounter meant nothing to him before Gennon dies from his wounds.

Griffith is the object of Gennon's obsessive attraction. Their earlier encounter was a financial transaction from Griffith's perspective, while Gennon developed a possessive fixation that persists for years.

General Boscogn is Chuder's formidable Purple Rhino commander at Doldrey. Gennon's personal interference repeatedly conflicts with General Boscogn's practical military judgment.

Casca learns about Gennon indirectly when Griffith explains why he accepted the nobleman's money during the Band of the Hawk's early years.
