Kureo Mado

Mado is obsessive, eccentric and openly hostile toward ghouls. He regards them as monsters imitating human behavior and shows little sympathy even toward ghouls who display recognizable familial love or fear. Hunting them is both his profession and a consuming personal fixation.

His behavior toward humans is markedly different. Mado is a dedicated investigator and mentor who takes the development of Koutarou Amon seriously. His methods can be harsh, but he teaches Amon to trust evidence, remain prepared for deception and continue fighting even when afraid.

Mado's hatred is rooted heavily in grief. His wife Kasuka was killed during an encounter with the One-Eyed Owl, leaving him obsessed with avenging her. He continues wearing his wedding ring beneath his glove and shapes much of his subsequent career around finding the ghoul responsible.

Mado is an experienced investigator, combatant and quinque specialist. Years of fighting ghouls give him excellent instincts for identifying them, reading kagune characteristics and recognizing weaknesses. His deductions can appear eccentric until later evidence proves them correct.

His obsession with quinques produces an unusually large personal arsenal. Fueguchi One, created from the rinkaku kagune of Asaki Fueguchi, functions as a flexible high-speed weapon. Fueguchi Two, made from the koukaku kagune of Ryouko Fueguchi, provides both defensive coverage and powerful counterattacks. He also possesses Kura and numerous other quinques accumulated during his career.

Mado's physical appearance is deceptive. He is agile enough to contend with dangerous ghouls and experienced enough to adapt his weapons to their Rc types. His knowledge of kagune matchups allows him to select quinques suited to particular opponents rather than depending on a single fighting style.

Mado is assigned to the 20th Ward alongside Koutarou Amon, becoming the younger investigator's partner and mentor. Their investigation brings them into conflict with the ghoul community surrounding Anteiku.

After investigating the Fueguchi family, Mado kills Ryouko Fueguchi and turns her kagune into Fueguchi Two. He then pursues her daughter Hinami Fueguchi, while Amon's investigation of Rabbit brings the investigators increasingly close to Touka Kirishima and Ken Kaneki.

Mado eventually corners Touka and Hinami beneath a bridge. He initially overwhelms Touka and uses the quinques made from Hinami's parents to torment her, but Hinami retaliates with her chimera kagune. After she refuses to kill him, Mado attempts one final attack and is killed by Touka.

His death has consequences long after the confrontation. Amon carries forward his mentor's teachings, while his daughter Akira eventually becomes Amon's new partner and inherits both parts of her father's professional legacy and the unresolved hatred surrounding his death.

Koutarou Amon is Mado's junior partner and protégé. Amon initially doubts his eccentric deductions, but Mado repeatedly demonstrates that his instincts are grounded in extensive experience. The two develop genuine professional respect, and Mado takes considerable pride in Amon's growth.

Akira Mado is Mado's daughter. He raises her after the loss of his wife, and the two share a close bond alongside their connection to the CCG.

Kasuka Mado is Mado's wife and a fellow investigator. Her death while confronting the One-Eyed Owl devastates him and becomes the central source of his obsessive hatred toward ghouls.

Yukinori Shinohara is one of Mado's former partners. The two worked together earlier in their careers, including during investigations connected to the Owl.

Touka Kirishima becomes one of Mado's targets while he investigates Rabbit and the Daughter ghoul. Their conflict ends when she kills him after his attempt to murder Hinami.

Hinami Fueguchi is pursued by Mado after he targets her family. He uses quinques created from her parents' kagune against her, provoking Hinami into attacking him despite her normally gentle nature.

Ryouko Fueguchi is one of the ghouls Mado hunts during his work in the 20th Ward. He kills her while she protects her daughter and subsequently converts her kagune into Fueguchi Two.
