Yukinori Shinohara

Shinohara is friendly, patient and comparatively easygoing for an investigator of his rank. He can speak casually with subordinates without sacrificing authority and is willing to guide inexperienced investigators rather than simply criticize their mistakes.

That patience becomes particularly evident with Juuzou Suzuya. Instead of dismissing Juuzou because of his disturbing behavior and poor understanding of ordinary social boundaries, Shinohara takes responsibility for teaching him how investigators work and how to interact with the people around him.

In combat, Shinohara is disciplined and courageous. He has spent years facing opponents capable of killing human investigators almost instantly and remains capable of making clear tactical decisions under extreme pressure.

Shinohara is one of the CCG's elite investigators. His Special Class rank reflects extensive combat experience, leadership ability and proficiency with quinques. His primary conventional weapon is Demon Yamada 1, an S-rated bikaku quinque.

He is also one of the investigators entrusted with the Arata series of prototype quinque armor. Created from the kakuja of Arata Kirishima, the armor dramatically increases an investigator's ability to withstand and exchange attacks with powerful ghouls. Its performance comes with severe physical demands on the wearer.

Shinohara's combination of strength, endurance and experience makes him particularly effective in close combat. He can coordinate with other Special Class investigators against opponents far beyond the capabilities of ordinary CCG personnel and is trusted with command responsibilities during major operations.

Shinohara has a long history with the CCG before the beginning of Tokyo Ghoul. He serves as an Academy instructor, works alongside investigators including Kureo Mado, and participates in earlier operations involving the Owl and other dangerous ghouls.

In the main story, he is assigned to the 20th Ward and becomes involved in the investigation of the Binge Eater. He later takes Juuzou Suzuya as his partner, becoming both a professional superior and a stabilizing personal influence on the younger investigator.

During the raid on Kanou's laboratory, Shinohara participates in the battle against Ken Kaneki. Kaneki's unstable kakuja form pushes him into a violent confrontation with Shinohara, whose Arata armor allows him to survive attacks that would otherwise be overwhelming.

Shinohara later participates in the Owl Suppression Operation at Anteiku. He and Juuzou fight the Owl alongside other senior investigators, but Shinohara suffers catastrophic injuries and falls into a long-term vegetative state.

Years later, after the collapse of the CCG's old order and the resolution of the Dragon crisis, Shinohara regains consciousness. Juuzou visits him and breaks down in tears when his former mentor finally awakens.

Juuzou Suzuya is Shinohara's partner and protégé. Shinohara treats the socially maladjusted young investigator with unusual patience, teaching him professional responsibility while showing genuine concern for his wellbeing. Their relationship profoundly shapes Juuzou, who becomes devastated when Shinohara is critically wounded and later weeps when his mentor finally regains consciousness.

Koutarou Amon is one of Shinohara's former students at the CCG Academy. Shinohara's history as an instructor contributes to his reputation as a mentor within the organization.

Kureo Mado is Shinohara's former partner and longtime colleague. They worked together earlier in their careers and shared experience fighting exceptionally dangerous ghouls.

Arata Kirishima is connected to Shinohara through the CCG's development of the Arata armor. Shinohara participated in the operation that captured Arata, whose kakuja was subsequently harvested to create the armor used by CCG investigators.

Ken Kaneki becomes one of the powerful ghouls Shinohara confronts during the CCG's operations. Their battle during the Kanou laboratory raid demonstrates the defensive capability of the Arata armor against Kaneki's developing kakuja.
