Kung Fu Dugong

The dugong leader is proud, competitive, and deeply committed to martial honor. It challenges opponents openly and accepts defeat without attempting to evade the consequences of its code.

Its loyalty begins as an obligation but quickly becomes enthusiastic admiration. After Luffy defeats the colony, the dugongs copy his gestures and respond to his instructions as devoted students.

The leader is also courageous enough to confront armed Baroque Works agents. Although smaller than many human fighters, it does not retreat when its master’s companions are endangered.

Kung Fu Dugongs are skilled martial artists capable of punching, blocking, and coordinating attacks with their flippers. They are strong enough to defeat ordinary humans and can move effectively both in water and along the riverbank.

The leader is the colony’s strongest and most disciplined fighter. Its techniques emphasize rapid close-range strikes, and it can direct the other dugongs in group attacks.

The manga establishes no Devil Fruit ability or Haki for the dugongs. An anime-original later story gives the leader Armament Haki and command of the Sea Animal Pirates, but those developments are not part of the manga’s continuity.

The dugongs confront Luffy when the Straw Hats reach the Sandora River during their journey through Arabasta. Luffy defeats the entire group, unintentionally becoming their recognized master under the colony’s code.

When Usopp and Carue are attacked by Baroque Works’ moving crab transport, the dugongs intervene on behalf of their master’s companions. Their sense of hierarchy extends Luffy’s status to his friends, whom they treat as senior disciples.

The Straw Hats eventually leave the colony behind to continue toward Rainbase. The leader’s later adventures as a pirate captain occur only in the television anime and are separate from the principal manga storyline.

Monkey D. Luffy becomes the dugong leader’s master by defeating it in martial combat. The leader responds with immediate loyalty and encourages the colony to follow Monkey D. Luffy’s example.

Usopp and Carue are recognized as companions of the dugongs’ master. The colony assists Usopp and Carue when Baroque Works agents threaten them.
