Kouki Akune

Akune is outwardly charming, polite and confident. His handsome appearance makes him popular with girls, and he generally carries himself with the composure expected from someone known throughout the school as the Prince of Judo.

His earlier personality was much harsher. As the Destroyer, Akune readily used violence and was prepared to hurt people without much concern for consequences. Meeting Medaka becomes a major influence on his attempt to leave that identity behind.

Akune's devotion to Medaka can also make him competitive with Zenkichi. He initially has difficulty understanding why someone as extraordinary as Medaka places such enormous trust in a seemingly Normal childhood friend.

Akune is an elite martial artist whose primary specialty is judo. His ability to execute throws, holds and other techniques makes him one of Hakoniwa Academy's strongest conventional fighters.

He is particularly talented at imitation. Akune can reproduce physical techniques after seeing them, allowing him to incorporate the methods of other martial artists into his own fighting style. Unlike Medaka's The End, however, his imitation does not automatically perfect the abilities he copies beyond their original users.

His athletic ability extends beyond formal judo. The combat experience accumulated during his violent middle-school period makes him adaptable in fights where normal competition rules no longer apply.

Akune enters through the Judo Club's request to the Medaka Box. His history with Medaka and Zenkichi soon becomes apparent, as does the contrast between the violent boy they knew in middle school and the admired athlete he has become.

Medaka recruits him as secretary, making him one of the first additions to the Student Council. He subsequently fights alongside the council during conflicts involving the Flask Plan and Class -13.

His personal development increasingly concerns identity. Akune has spent years modeling himself around Medaka's expectations, and later challenges force him to determine what qualities actually belong to him rather than to the roles of Destroyer, Prince or devoted follower.

Medaka Kurokami profoundly influences Akune after confronting his violent behavior in middle school. He admires and loves Medaka Kurokami, and initially shapes much of his personality around becoming someone worthy of her approval.

Zenkichi Hitoyoshi has known Akune since middle school. Akune initially sees Zenkichi Hitoyoshi as unimpressive compared with Medaka and struggles with the importance she places on him.

Mogana Kikaijima becomes Akune's fellow Student Council member, and the two frequently operate alongside one another during council activities.

Nekomi Nabeshima is the captain of the Judo Club who recognizes Akune's talent while deliberately challenging the assumptions surrounding his reputation as its prince.
