Kouen Ren

Kouen is serious, intensely curious and unusually scholarly for a military conqueror. History fascinates him because he wants to understand how civilizations rise, collapse and reshape the world. He is willing to spend long periods studying records when not campaigning.

He is ambitious but does not treat conquest as simple personal glory. Kouen believes that political unification can end the constant wars between nations, even if achieving that goal requires violent expansion.

Kouen is one of the world's most accomplished Dungeon Capturers, having conquered three Dungeons. His Djinn are Agares, Astaroth and Phenex, giving him access to multiple distinct forms of magic.

Agares provides gravity-based power, while Astaroth grants heat magic capable of producing devastating flames. Phenex specializes in healing and support. Possessing three Metal Vessels gives Kouen extraordinary tactical flexibility.

He is also an accomplished swordsman and general. His ability to command enormous armies and coordinate his brothers' forces makes his strategic influence as important as his individual combat strength.

Kouen emerges as one of the central figures behind the Kou Empire's rapid territorial expansion. His Western Subjugation Army absorbs territories including Balbadd and brings him into increasing contact with Sinbad and Aladdin.

At Magnostadt, Kouen leads Kou forces into the escalating conflict and later cooperates with other Dungeon Capturers against the enormous magical threat created there.

After Emperor Koutoku's death, the struggle over Kou's succession develops into a civil war between Kouen's faction and Hakuryuu's. Kouen is defeated and sentenced to execution, but Hakuryuu secretly permits Aladdin to fake the execution. Kouen survives in exile on Samon Island with his brothers.

Koumei Ren is Kouen's full younger brother and principal strategist. Kouen places considerable trust in his intelligence.

Kouha Ren is his younger half-brother and another general in the Western Subjugation Army.

Judar recognizes Kouen as one of his King Vessels and supports the Kou princes militarily.

Hakuryuu Ren is Kouen's younger relative and eventually political rival. Their competing claims and goals culminate in the Kou Civil War.

Aladdin attracts Kouen's attention because of his knowledge of Alma Torran and the world's history.

Sinbad is both a potential ally and political competitor whose international ambitions conflict with Kouen's own plans.
