Kiyota Nobunaga

Kiyota is loud, competitive and exceptionally self-confident. He regards himself as the standout first-year player in Kanagawa and readily boasts about his ability, particularly when Rukawa is receiving attention. His pride makes him quick to challenge other talented players and equally quick to mock opponents he considers inferior.

That arrogance can work against him. Kiyota initially underestimates Shohoku and is embarrassed when its players demonstrate abilities he had dismissed. Hanamichi Sakuragi becomes a natural comic rival because the two share impulsiveness, athleticism and enormous confidence; Kiyota calls Sakuragi a "red-haired monkey," while Sakuragi retaliates by calling him a "wild monkey."

His behavior toward his own team is more respectful. Kiyota accepts the authority of Shinichi Maki and understands that playing for Kainan means meeting an unusually high competitive standard. Beneath the boasting, he takes basketball and his responsibilities as a starter seriously.

Kiyota's defining athletic trait is his jumping ability. At 178 cm, he is short for a high-school forward yet can dunk forcefully and challenge much taller players above the rim. His acceleration and body control complement that vertical leap, allowing him to attack the basket aggressively.

He is also a capable ball-handler and perimeter defender. Kainan can trust him with meaningful assignments despite his first-year status, an important distinction on a team dominated by experienced upperclassmen.

Kiyota is not as polished an all-around scorer as Rukawa, and his eagerness can lead him into poor decisions. His physical gifts nevertheless make him one of Kanagawa's most promising younger players.

Kiyota is introduced as part of Kainan, the dominant basketball program in Kanagawa. His presence establishes that even Kainan's youngest starter is a formidable athlete and gives Shohoku another difficult individual matchup beyond Maki and Soichiro Jin.

During Kainan's game against Shohoku, Kiyota's dismissive attitude toward the challengers changes as their ability becomes undeniable. He is repeatedly forced to take Sakuragi seriously and participates in Kainan's efforts to contain Shohoku's explosive offense.

Kiyota later accompanies Maki and Sakuragi to Aichi, where they investigate teams likely to appear at the national tournament. There he witnesses the extraordinary physical ability of Hiroshi Morishige, broadening his view of the talent awaiting Kainan and Shohoku outside Kanagawa.

Shinichi Maki is Kiyota's captain and the teammate he respects most strongly. Kiyota may be unruly in conversation, but he recognizes Maki's authority and ability.

Hanamichi Sakuragi is Kiyota's loudest personal rival. Their mutual monkey-themed insults reflect their similar pride and energetic personalities, while their athleticism gives their confrontations genuine competitive weight.

Kaede Rukawa is another important rival because Kiyota wants recognition as Kanagawa's premier rookie rather than allowing that reputation to belong to Rukawa.

Soichiro Jin and Kazuma Takasago are fellow Kainan starters whose experience helps form the disciplined team around Kiyota.

Hiroshi Morishige attracts Kiyota's attention when he travels with Maki and Sakuragi to observe the Aichi tournament.
