Personality
Personality
Kishimoto is calm, confident and pragmatic. He has already tested himself against players pursuing professional careers and accepted that his own ability was not developing far enough.
That realism shapes how he treats Hikaru. When Hikaru talks about catching Akira while remaining in school-level Go, Kishimoto does not encourage him politely; he tells him, in effect, that his current environment is nowhere near sufficient.
He respects genuine strength and does not cling to status. When Akira proves vastly stronger, Kishimoto accepts the difference rather than pretending that being club president makes him first board.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Kishimoto is a strong amateur with previous insei experience. He never rises beyond the lower insei league, but that training still places him well above most middle-school club players.
His Go tends to emphasize influence and control of the center. Against ordinary school opponents, his experience allows him to recognize attempts to disrupt his rhythm and respond calmly.
He easily defeats Hikaru when they first play without Sai's assistance, giving Hikaru direct evidence of the difference between his current strength and the level required even to survive among insei.
Story Role
Story Role
Kishimoto leads Kaio's Go Club when Akira joins the school. He initially occupies the first-board position but plays Akira to determine who should represent the team at the top board.
Akira overwhelms him so thoroughly that Kishimoto resigns early and willingly yields the position, acknowledging the gulf between them.
Later, Kishimoto plays Hikaru and defeats him easily. His blunt dismissal of Hikaru's hope of catching Akira while staying in school competition becomes one of the decisive pushes behind Hikaru's choice to become an insei.
Relationships
Relationships
Akira Touya is a member of Kishimoto's Kaio Go Club whose ability vastly exceeds his own. Kishimoto respects Akira Touya's strength and accepts that he cannot compete with him for first board.
Hikaru Shindou seeks to reach Akira's level, but Kishimoto defeats Hikaru Shindou easily and tells him that school Go will not provide the competition he needs.
Yuuki Mitani faces Kishimoto during the Haze-Kaio school tournament. Kishimoto recognizes Yuuki Mitani's attempt to use fast, aggressive play to unsettle him and defeats him.
