Hikaru no Go

Akira Touya

塔矢アキラ

Story Role

Akira meets Hikaru at a Go salon and accepts a game against what appears to be a complete beginner. Unbeknownst to him, Sai dictates Hikaru's moves and defeats Akira decisively.

The loss changes Akira's trajectory. He pursues Hikaru for another game, only to discover that Hikaru's own Go is vastly weaker. Unable to reconcile the two versions of his rival, Akira continues watching Hikaru even while advancing toward professional play.

Akira becomes a professional before Hikaru and eventually sees Hikaru develop enough to become the rival he had expected from the beginning. Their professional games and analyses increasingly reveal similarities between Hikaru's Go and the mysterious online player sai, bringing Akira closer to understanding that the two are somehow connected.

At the Hokuto Cup, Akira represents Japan alongside Hikaru and Yashiro. The tournament marks a stage where Hikaru and Akira are no longer separated by the enormous gap that existed when Hikaru first began learning.
