Kantarou Hashida

Kantarou is playful despite his chronic illness. Confined to bed for long periods, he entertains himself by playing pranks on the household staff, including pretending to have died.

He also values personal freedom more than the responsibilities attached to the Hashida fortune. His relationship with Ofusa develops naturally while she cares for him, and he chooses a life with her over remaining within the rigid household prepared by his father.

Kantarou's calm, slightly irreverent demeanor is inherited by his son, who displays a similarly unruffled expression even as an infant.

Kantarou has no supernatural powers or established combat abilities.

His chronic illness leaves him physically weak and frequently confined to bed, preventing him from living the active life expected of the heir to a major company.

His importance is consequently familial rather than martial, particularly through the decisions he makes concerning Ofusa and their child.

Kantarou's story is told through flashbacks during the dispute over Kanshichirou Hashida. As Kahei's only son, Kantarou is expected to inherit the Hashida Company.

Ofusa is employed as his caretaker, and the two gradually fall in love. They leave the Hashida estate and attempt to live together independently.

Kantarou's illness eventually worsens, and Kahei brings him back to the family home after discovering that Ofusa is pregnant. Kantarou dies before he can raise their son, leaving Kanshichirou as the remaining Hashida heir.

The infant's striking resemblance to Kantarou is also why he initially appears to resemble Gintoki, creating the mistaken assumption that Gintoki might be his father.

Kahei Hashida is Kantarou's father and expects him to inherit the Hashida Company.

Ofusa is Kantarou's caretaker and lover. The two leave the Hashida household together after falling in love.

Kanshichirou Hashida is Kantarou and Ofusa's son and consequently the next heir of the Hashida family.

Sakata Gintoki becomes involved with Kantarou's family later because of Kanshichirou's remarkable resemblance to both men.
