Personality
Personality
Little of Kantarou's ordinary personality is shown before his transformation. The reaction of the neighborhood establishes that he was a familiar member of the Asakusa community rather than a stranger passing through the district.
His familiarity with Benimaru is especially evident in the captain's response to the incident. Benimaru speaks to him personally rather than treating the Infernal solely as a target requiring elimination.
That relationship gives Kantarou's brief appearance more emotional weight than a routine Infernal incident. His neighbors understand the destruction accompanying his purification as something Kantarou himself would have appreciated.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Kantarou is not established as a pyrokinetic while human. After spontaneous human combustion, he becomes an Infernal and gains the durability, heat and destructive potential associated with transformed victims.
He remains dangerous enough that Company 7 responds in force, but he is no match for Benimaru. As a compound Second and Third Generation pyrokinetic, Benimaru can overpower ordinary Infernals with little difficulty.
Kantarou's significance in combat lies less in his individual abilities than in what his purification reveals about Company 7's methods. Benimaru destroys surrounding structures while fighting, combining suppression with Asakusa's traditional idea of a spectacular funeral.
Story Role
Story Role
Kantarou becomes an Infernal during Company 8's visit to Asakusa. His transformation gives the visiting brigade an opportunity to observe Company 7 in action and initially makes its methods appear reckless.
Benimaru attacks with overwhelming force, destroying buildings around the Infernal instead of minimizing property damage in the manner expected elsewhere in the Tokyo Empire. Company 8 is initially shocked by the apparent disregard for the neighborhood.
The reaction of Asakusa's residents changes the meaning of the scene. They explain that Benimaru's destructive purification is their way of giving the transformed person a proper send-off, and that they would rather be put to rest by him than by outsiders.
Benimaru ultimately gives Kantarou his final purification and addresses him directly afterward, acknowledging both his effort and his famously flashy temperament.
Relationships
Relationships
Benimaru Shinmon knows Kantarou as a fellow resident of Asakusa and personally performs his purification after his Infernalization. Benimaru's farewell makes clear that he remembers Kantarou as an individual rather than merely another Infernal.
Konro Sagamiya serves alongside Benimaru Shinmon in Company 7 and participates in the firefighting culture responsible for protecting Asakusa.
Shinra Kusakabe and the visiting Company 8 personnel witness Kantarou's incident, which helps them understand why Asakusa accepts Company 7's unconventional methods.
