Kansuke Yamato

Kansuke is serious, forceful, short-tempered, and direct. He readily intimidates suspects and has little patience for incompetence, particularly when an investigation is being slowed by careless assumptions.

His rough manner hides strong loyalty. Kansuke cares deeply for colleagues and childhood friends and is willing to place himself in extreme danger for them. He also respects intelligence regardless of age or rank.

Unlike many adults who dismiss Conan's deductions, Kansuke recognizes almost immediately that the boy possesses exceptional investigative ability and is willing to listen when Conan points toward evidence.

Kansuke is an experienced police investigator with strong deductive instincts. He can reconstruct complicated crimes, interrogate suspects aggressively, and identify inconsistencies without depending on Conan to provide the complete solution.

His avalanche injuries permanently damaged his left eye and left leg. He therefore walks with a forearm crutch, but the disability does not prevent him from carrying out field investigations or entering dangerous situations.

Kansuke also possesses considerable physical courage and remains willing to confront suspects or rescue colleagues despite his injuries.

Kansuke first appears during the Furinkazan case, investigating murders connected to people from the Nagano village where he and Yui grew up. The case introduces his history with Yui and the avalanche that nearly killed him while he was pursuing a criminal connected to an earlier investigation.

Morofushi's decision to ignore orders and search for the missing Kansuke establishes the depth of their friendship even before the two resume their competitive investigative dynamic.

Kansuke becomes a recurring regional police ally whenever Conan's cases bring him to Nagano, often solving substantial portions of mysteries independently of the protagonists.

Yui Uehara is Kansuke's childhood friend and subordinate. The two care deeply for one another, with Yui Uehara's feelings for Kansuke repeatedly implied to extend beyond ordinary friendship.

Takaaki Morofushi is Kansuke's childhood friend, professional rival, and fellow Nagano inspector. Their competitive arguments conceal considerable mutual trust.

Conan Edogawa earns Kansuke's respect through his deductions. Kansuke is among the police officers most willing to treat Conan Edogawa's observations seriously.

Heiji Hattori works alongside Kansuke during cases involving both Nagano and the visiting Osaka detective.

Kuroto Kai was a respected local police officer whose example inspired Kansuke and Yui to pursue police careers.
