Kanisawa

Kanisawa is responsible and organized in her limited appearance. She takes her supervisory role seriously, explains the exercise to the junior students and works alongside her classmates without seeking attention.

Her characterization is brief, so broader claims about her temperament are not established in the manga or anime.

As an advanced academy student, Kanisawa has received instruction in standard Shinigami disciplines and is trusted to participate in a supervised Hollow-combat exercise. She carries a sword, but no Zanpakutō name, release or individual technique is revealed.

Kanisawa accompanies Shūhei Hisagi and Aoga while their class oversees first-year students on a field mission. The assigned targets are artificial Hollows, but the exercise is disrupted by real Hollows capable of concealing their spiritual pressure.

A Huge Hollow suddenly impales and kills Kanisawa. Her violent death helps define the traumatic academy incident that shapes Hisagi’s understanding of fear and combat. The manga depicts the wound more graphically than the television adaptation.

Shūhei Hisagi is Kanisawa’s classmate and fellow mission leader. Supplementary manga material later indicates that she had feelings for him but died without confessing them.

Aoga is her classmate and the third senior assigned to the exercise. Momo Hinamori, Renji Abarai and Izuru Kira are among the junior students placed under the seniors’ supervision.
