Personality
Personality
Kanio is aggressive, persistent and intensely committed to challenging Roboco. His limited speech centers on crab-like vocalizations, so much of his personality is communicated through his expressions, fighting poses and willingness to return after humiliating defeats.
He shares Dr. Mockus's refusal to give up. Being defeated does not permanently discourage him; instead, he returns after further modification and again treats the next confrontation as though it will finally establish his superiority.
That persistence gradually makes Kanio less like a disposable enemy and more like a familiar rival. Later stories can place greater emphasis on his connection with Roboco precisely because the pair have confronted one another so many times.
Abilities & Powers
Abilities & Powers
Kanio is a purpose-built combat robot with considerable strength and durability. His crab-like design incorporates large pincers as his primary weapons, while his armored body allows him to withstand punishment that would be impossible for an ordinary person.
Dr. Mockus repeatedly upgrades him after defeats. One modification enlarges his right pincer and improves his combat performance through changes intended to increase power, speed and durability. Even these improvements generally prove inadequate against Roboco at full strength.
Kanio is nevertheless genuinely dangerous under the right circumstances. When Roboco is severely weakened by depleted energy, he is capable of overpowering her, demonstrating that his poor record against her reflects Roboco's exceptional power rather than Kanio being harmless. He is also durable enough to return after being forcefully buried in the ground during their confrontations.
Story Role
Story Role
Kanio first appears alongside Dr. Mockus when the scientist confronts Roboco and calls her the "ultimate weapon," threatening to expose the embarrassing combat-oriented past she wants to hide from Bondo Taira. Kanio serves as Mockus's direct means of challenging her.
Their initial encounters establish a recurring pattern: Mockus improves Kanio, confidently sends him after Roboco and watches the upgraded robot suffer another overwhelming defeat. The rivalry resurfaces when Mockus studies Roboco closely enough to recognize that she becomes vulnerable when her energy is depleted. During one such weakened state, Kanio finally gains a decisive physical advantage over her until Gorilla Gachi intervenes.
Kanio continues appearing well beyond these early battles. Chapter 169, "Kanio & Roboco," gives their long-running connection direct focus, demonstrating that the crab robot developed into a recurring member of the supporting cast rather than remaining a one-off enemy.
Relationships
Relationships
Dr. Mockus is Kanio's creator and commanding partner. Mockus deploys him against Roboco and repeatedly rebuilds or upgrades him when previous attempts fail.
Roboco is Kanio's principal rival. He repeatedly challenges her, only to discover that even extensive modifications rarely close the enormous gap between their combat capabilities.
Gorilla Gachi intervenes when Kanio attacks a weakened Roboco and demonstrates his own extraordinary strength by sending the combat robot flying with a slap.
Bondo Taira becomes involved in Kanio's earliest appearances through his position as Roboco's master, particularly because Roboco desperately wants to keep the more embarrassing details of her past hidden from him.
